Make either Ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia have an equivalent of 17th century European scientific revolution before 1000 BC. What intellectual and cultural developments could lead to this? IMO an equivalent of the Milesian school would be helpful.
Anyways, this is quite challenging as it would require massive changes to culture and breaking the power of religion.

Did either culture have a god of knowledge? Can't say... if they had, it'd make sense to professionalize the quest for knowledge.

Good point. I think that in Mesopotamia they were more gods or goddesses of war, fertility and the like. Plus I think initially most of their gods were local ones for individual cities and towns and it was only when sizeable empires started to form that some of those were absorbed into a pantheon. Although they did have a very advance ability in astronomy and possibly some other areas. Egypt I knew even less about but while they had many deities I'm not aware of any equivalent of Athena say in Greek mythology.
