I'm NOT asking if the 2012 red dawn could happen because it was hopelessly inaccurate. I'm asking if the original Red Dawn events could happen.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: No. The fact scenario outlined in the film was more than improbable, but relies on the utter breakdown of NATO, consecutive US administrations doing nothing about Red penetration of the Western Hemisphere and the Soviets suddenly developing capabilities, equipment and interests it never had.

To comment about the 2012 red dawn movie though I have not seen it, it would make sense to have the worst troops , such as the north Koreans to use them for occupational duty instead of conventional warfare
