The project (II) of high speed bomber BMW answered a will to produce a strategic bomber, extremely fast and aerodynamic from where its rather odd appearance. Imagined and drawn in 1943 by the department of the projects BMW directed by the Flugbaumeister DipI-Ing Kappus (sic), this strange machine was to be equipped with two turboprop engines BMW 109-028, each one having a power of 6 750 HP and an additional residual thrust of approximately 600 kg (1 322 Ib). They were to confer to the bomber a speed of approximately 870 km/h. The engines were mounted on two sponsons (a protruding element on the side of a vehicle) making an angle of 45° above the fuselage, this arrangement having been chosen to move away the gases and the turbulent air flow (the "dirty air", as in F1) from the propellers and the tail surfaces. The low wing "cantilever" design featured forward swept wings combined with a horizontal leading edge. Development began in the fall of 1944 to test the turboprop installation. However, further development of the BMW fast bomber projects was halted in 1945. Source: blueiskewl

There is a certain theory that a lot of the bizarre aircraft projects and ship designs served their purpose of keeping the designs away from the front.

Maintenance nightmare and pilot killer are added benefits. Give the designer a VG1-5 and send him to the Western Front to face the French. They will fix him right up.
