Costa Rica has historically had a lower indigenous population compared to the rest of Latin America, and post-independence grew the cash crop: coffee. So, what if the conquistadors or rich Spaniards took large swaths of land in Costa Rica then imported slaves from Africa to work that land, growing cash crops like Cacao and coffee?

You'd need demand for coffee for this first.
