Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, October 10th, 1898Captain Daniel Bierer.Yikes! 14 Children? Anyway, he appears to have made no lasting impression on the American army. Diary of Chriss A. Bell Oct. 10, 1898Philippine Circuses are not what one would expect in the United States. At the time, these Filipino exhibitories were very in line with the kind of acrobatic dance troupes, one would see in southeast Asia and southern China. The performers mixed tumbling, juggling, some martial arts sword and spear work and in many ways were an extension of the "Chinese" tradition, but with local variations and themes, depending on the country. But then this happened. There is the American tradition of the "Wild West Show", which was a kind of circus in which living examples of people "conquered" by the Americans were paraded in story re-enactments of the American pioneers going out to tame the savage lands inhabited by "Indians" (PERJORATIVE TERM, the correct term is First Nations or Native Americans.) How did this apply to the Filipino citizens about to be misruled from Washington? Even 130 years later, it sickens me, how appalling and uncivilized this treatment of human beings was. Yet, that was the America of 1898.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Wednesday, October 12th, 1898Look at the details and then ask yourself these questions: a. Pork and beans may have come from canned rations, the beans certainly did, but that beef had to have been bought on the local economy. Why could the American army buy beef from Filipino farmers around Manila? b. "New lamps" See photo. Made in Manila around 1898. It is actually called a "Manila" oil lamp because of the way it is made. Does anyone think Manila was not a city of crafts and trades people? The city had them. Just down the coast, Filipino craftsmen were restoring the Isle de Luzon to seaworthiness so she could be towed to Singapore for a complete fitout and they repaired the shot up USS Baltimore. A coal oil lamp was NOTHING for them to make out of spares and scraps. =========================================================================================== Future beef stew to go with rice. More replacement for that "canned beef" General Merritt said that he had no problem with. I wonder where the Filipinos sold the canned beef the Americans sold them? They certainly were not stupid enough to eat it, after some of them (English speakers and readers azmong the merchants.) read the Manila Times. =========================================================================================== And... a birthday of note. Mariano Trias was born today. Another one of the Katipunan leaders who gave the Americans all they could handle, he eventually brought good government to Cavite.

Diary of James J. Loughrey October 13, 1898I want you to notice something... In north Manila, the 10th Pennsylvania train bandits have been rained on every other day. South of the Pasing River, about 20 miles as the Filipino crow flies (See picture), the 1st California Flour Mill thieves had nor rain for a whole week. Also, while the train bandits, had fresh moo meat and rice, and fancy shoot me now duck suits, the flour mill thieves are still stuck with hot blue wool shoot me now suits and have just received their first 'mud flaps and new tires' since leaving California. And they had to eat salted Filipino horses, hardtack hockey pucks and what is laughably called "Hong Kong coffee". Philippine Coucal.Notice the animal pulling the Kalesa? It is called a "horse". Something like it apparently was salted and prepared as a 1st California flour mill thief food ration like a "bako" (cow) would have been.for the 10th Pennsylvania train bandits. Speaking of that floue mill? Crackers or if they are round, hockey pucks. How about that "Hong Kong Coffee"? It was actually Filipino coffee and about the only good thing the Californias foraged (stole). I am guessing that the 1st California got a taste of "Liberica" a rather BITTER to American taste buds brand of coffee. =========================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Thursday, October 13th, 1898 The eight who failed the "exam" were the reason the "whore patrol" was in effect. They contracted syphilis. They got new shoes and socks, too. This was usually a BAD sign to US Army regulars who knew how the American army operated. If the 10th Pennsylvania had been a cavalry outfit, like the 4th New York, they would have known immediately by the reshoeing of the horses by the regimental ferriers, that they were being readied for a campaign against the "Indians". Being "infantry" the 10th Pennsylvania received a "reshoeing" of their Peters and Pauls, and being "national guardsmen" they were "clueless" as to why. This information of new shoes issued went right by the Filipino Katipunan who got it as soon as the American infantry got their shoes (Filipinos worked in the supply depot.), and for much the same reason. They just did not understand the American army, either.

Note. I am headed off to take care of business. It will be much like what I did in South Carolina these past 7 days, but in an area where computer access is nil and TIME will be at a premium for about 10 days if I am lucky. Longer if I am not. I will update the thread as soon as i am finished.

Diary of James J. Loughrey October 14, 1898Well, guess what? The flour mill thieves found some Filipinos who knew how to work the flour mill that the 1st California stole. Apparently the Filipinos knew how to use a pot oven, too.Now what I had in mind was this: American colonial era beehive oven from Vermont. Filipinos are a little bit different. They use something like a giant sterno cooker. Learned something new. ============================================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Friday, October 14th, 1898You know what? One hour traditional bayonet practice might work against a Cuban bandito or a Spanish tercio, but... The casualty ratio for Americans was TWO killed for every one wounded in combat against every Filipino in an ambush duing the war. The Filipinos DID NOT PLAY. The Americans learned to fall back and shoot. And they developed this as a lesson that the Filipinos taught them. One hit... one kill.

Diary of James J. Loughrey October 15, 1898See previous post. If you do not know how to use a palayok to boil rice, then you get "mush". The mail will get to San Francisco about the time General Otis, the war criminal, starts the shooting war. That is a while yet. Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, October 15th, 1898Okay, which typhoon was this? And 10,000 Murata rifles and 1,000,000 rounds of ammunition were NOT delivered. ================================================================= Today in Philippine History, October 15, 1866, Manuel Artigas was born in Tacloban, Leyte

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Sunday, October 16th, 1898The typhoon is still churning up Manila Bay, the cows scheduled for stew are seasick and someone had better keep an eye on those racist and trigger happy 1st South Dakota bushwhackers. They are the most likely yahoos to start something with the "Indians". (As they called the Filipinos.).

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, October 17th, 1898They got the cattle off the steamer. I should mention in passing that the "The American Soldier", "The Manila Times" and "The Freedom" are starting a newspaper ciculation war in Manila and spreading wild unsubstanhtiated rumors. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits are getting the hang of it about "scuttlebutt". We, humans, love to hang around the water hole and swap opinions and lies with each other. What is not a lie... Today in Philippine History, October 17, 1857, Maximo Viola was born. You know something? I bet he helped the Americans with many of the bacterial skin infections that was felling so many of their soldiers, but this happened only after the war was "officially" concluded.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Tuesday, October 18th, 1898Dewey's fleet are testing their guns and engaged in target practice. ================================================================================= This is not good. First entry from CAPT. (George) Huntington. Diary of American Trooper Manila, P. I., October 18, 1898.Here we go. He is from Massachuessetts and definitely college educated. He is an officer of the staff judge advocate division and was assigned originally to the 1st Massachussetts Volunteer Infantry to staff them up before being reassigned to 8th Corps Staff and shipped off to the Philippines as part of Merritt's staff (Now he serves on the war criminal, Otis' staff.) His first name is George. He is a Captain of the United States Army Reserve and by profession a LAWYER. He refers to the Dreyfuss Affair and Emile Zola. What this has to do with the mess Otis currently makes in the Philippine Islands will become obvious in the future as we see Otis exceed his authority and go positively Japanese insubordinate on McKinley. There is a lot of political insubordination coming up. You think Douglas MacArthur and Harry Truman was bad? Well, these American general idiots (Doug and too many others like him.) learned their bad habits in the Philippine Islands and they learned it from their dads.

Diary of James J. Loughrey October 20, 1898Out of 100 men TOE, only 86 fit for duty. Note that? 14 men are "missing". ==================================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Thursday, October 20th, 1898They are living high off the "baka". a. Jail detail is a little "thin" on the gun gallery. b. A third of the regiment is still busy in Hawaii with the "annexation". The "British" are being "helpful" as usual. George Knotts has been a looooong time on the sick list, have you noticed? He is what we label a "goldbrick".
=================================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Thursday, Oct. 20th, 1898 I have a very low opinion of this "expletive deleted" missionary for "obvious" reasons. Racism, segregationism and egotism aside, I read this passage and wonder very little why the first impression the Filipino people got of American "missionaries" was a most unfavorable one. (See the Underlined.). Diary of Chriss A. Bell Oct. 20, 1898The man died of a skin infection. Again 5 months in and incompetent US Army medical care kills more American soldiers than Katipunan pickets do. And the Filipino doctors the Americans should be consulting? The Yankees put them into the Bilibid. Idiots. The 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry are a particularly bad example of this stupidity.

Diary of James J. Loughrey October 22, 1898The rumors are true as evidenced by the unit dispositions, the issue of KHAKI uniforms (a kind of green mustard color), the deployment of artillery, the issuance of a combat load of ammunitiion and so forth. The Flour Mill Thieves of the 1st California are headed out to the trench line. ============================================================================= Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Saturday, Oct. 22d, 18981. You want to read what the cockroach bought?2. That "friendly Filipino" was shired or dragooned to teamster the gun battery horses, because those were Filipino horses pulling the US guns. 3. The USS Concord is holding special services, a tradition when it is expected the Navy is about to go to war. The sailors need the opiate of the masses to buck them up. 4. US infantry gets regimental artillery and operates with it. This is a souvenir of The Little Big Horn, where US troops do NOT go into action without field guns in immediate support, especially against entrenched "native enemy" who outnumber them and just might be better armed and trained. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, October 22nd, 18985. C Company 10th Pennsylvania train bandits are expecting either a jail break or a Katipunan raid on the Bilibid.
