What PoDs would lead to the Philipines that are as well off as possible after 1945? Perhaps a stronger movement for the Philippines to be accepted as a U.S. commonwealth like the Marianas and Puerto Rico. |

There was no statehood movement in Congress in the 1930s. The U.S. wanted to grant the archipelago independence as soon as possible. Statehood would mean having a representation in Congress. Plus since Filipinos are brown people and America in the 1930s/40s was a segregated place, no one wanted a predominantly brown people state to be admitted in the union. |

There was no statehood movement in Congress in the 1930s. The U.S. wanted to grant the archipelago independence as soon as possible. Statehood would mean having a representation in Congress. Plus since Filipinos are brown people and America in the 1930s/40s was a segregated place, no one wanted a predominantly brown people state to be admitted in the union. Also the Philippines with a population of 16.5 million in 1946 would mean they would become the largest and most populated states in the United States: Population density (people per sq. km) 1946 |

Well i feel a commonwealth status is a downgrade compared to a statehood. There are those in Congress who don't want a commonwealth status because that would mean Manila would get overdependent in DC. Just look at Puerto Rico right now. Republicans don't want it to be a state and others have criticized it as a resource sink especially after Hurricane Maria in 2017. The same problems with Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, along with the associated countries of Palau, Marshalls, and Micronesia, which are far from the mainland and could not self-sustain themselves. |
