Another British aircraft from the Drake's Drum timeline. A Vickers Vindex bomber, developed from the long series of large, high altitude bomber designs Vickers completed in 1942 and 43 in OTL and is based on a variant of Scheme 'B' of 14/1/43 a drawing of which can be found in Tony Buttler's BSP 4. The engines are tractor rather than pusher, so the nacelle mounted rear armament has clear firing arcs. This image is Photoshopped.

With 6 engines, it is beyond the B-29. The Vickers C often gets a bit more attention, but it is a nice image.

lordroel, its certainly more capable than the B29, but of a similar technological level. The B36 is significantly more advanced. simon darkshade, I've assumed the British AM will be a little leary of something as radical as the Vickers schemes 'C' which was drawn at roughly the same time.

So what would be use use of Vickers 'Vindex', in Europe the RAF can hit Berlin with OTL bombers from basses in the United Kingdom, in the Pacfic i can see good use with the RAAF able to strike much farther than OTL with a bomber like the Vickers 'Vindex'.

In OTL the RAF operated a medium altitude night attack force - the Halifaxs Lancasters Wellingtons etc - Vindex would give them a high altitude capability they sorely lacked in OTL. It can also carry very large bombs long distances...

Could I be reading too much into those three words or are you talking about the likes of Tallboy, Grand Slam and their successors.
I haven't read beyond the 1st book and that was some while back but did the Nazis take most of European Russia? In which case Baku could also be a key target, although that might be best attacked by shorter range stuff if we still have bases in the ME. However somewhere along the Volga or Urals could be a pig if they got that far.

No, I do mean Earthquake bombs up to the US 'Cloudmaker' size, as well as other nastier things...

Ouch, nasty. Especially if you happen to be Slavic.

The other advantage of a big bomber is that it can carry a lot of heavy smaller bombs - 2000lb penetration bombs, particularly. In APOD, following up Bomber Command visits with high altitude penetration raids resulted in really wrecking the infrastructure (water, gas, sewage) and making cities uninhabitable.

Sounds a bit like Orson Wells famous line from The Third Man...
