I was watching The Road (2009) last night. In both the book and the film, it is unmentioned on purpose what caused that nightmare situation. What could it have been? Yellowstone blowing? A comet/asteroid? A massive nuclear attack?

True. Just about any of the ones James listed would qualify as an extinction event but Yellowstone blowing is often referred to as such. The other obvious factor is possibly global warming reaching an high but not extreme level. Although from what I recall of the film it seemed to be more cold than hot but the film could be set at high latitudes or there could be some unexpected twist such as the Gulf Stream being blocked.

Something instant happened. IIRC, The Man says the clocks stopped at 1:30am. Which made me think it was either Yellowstone or a nuke.

I'm not sure that would be Yellowstone then, depending on how large they are from the volcano. Especially since that's likely to have a number of very big pre-shocks before it really goes and then it would be spurting out more for problems weeks/months afterwards. More like a large nuke exchange or an big impact event as they would be pretty much instantaneous, especially the latter. Also if there's no mention of any warning, such as a period of tension, that would fit more in with a big impact that for some reason escaped attention.

Looking at the images below from the movie and this i found on the net: The pervasively and excessively cold climate suggests a nuclear winter. The nature of the destruction - burnt skeletons in cities, collapsing dead trees, etc. The father's illness, which seems likely to be lung cancer. The father actively worries about whether or not some food is okay - it's likely he's concerned about irradiation. Virtually no life, plant or animal. The prevalence of cannibalism suggests that humans are the most viable remaining food source for any fair-sized group of people. For this to be the case, it would mean farming isn't viable (which would be explained by the soil being irradiated, or by the climate of nuclear winter), nor is hunting (probably because the animals surviving the event were hunted to extinction fairly quickly). I go with a massive nuclear exchange. But then again the author made it so that it can be anything you want it to be.
