Russian Civil War 1948 It seemed the Russian Republic had gotten the upper hand on the Sovietunion in Moscow. Ukraine had gotten time to begin rebuilding the new country though the Turk closing of the Straits was a major obstacle to its grain export; the export was used instead to make deals with the warring parties within Russia and keep Ukraine out of conflict. Kazan Republic had kept the war with the Sovietunion going without entering alliance with the Russian Republic as it tried to negotiate a new state alliance with the Siberian Republic. Most Russian republics seemed to have written off the Central Asian republics which were on and off at war with each other. The Turks seemed to be active in Central Asia to recruit allies but also in the Steppes east of Ukraine – the Kalmyk Cossack lands. The major obstacle in the area was Astrakhan allied to the Sibirian Republic though the famine had undermined the strength of all fighting parties the Turks was able to recruit the Kalmyk Cossack Republic and thus gain a way into the Steppe lands. The Turk machinations in the Steppe and Central Asia made for some annoyance in Britain that felt some kind of Game developing once more though the Turks were no Russia it was bloody annoying as the Turks was the linguistic cousins of many a Central Asia etnicity and shared their Islamic belief.
That a hell of a provocation given that Ukraine isn't an active combatant and its in breach of the OTL conventions - which may not exist here. Plus given that Ukraine has the best of the agricultural lands of the former USSR and that production in the rest is undoubtedly affected by the conflict that's a lot of the potential grain exports taken off the world market. - Thinking how disruption the current war in Ukraine is. Sounds like the Turks are having a revival of their activities in the final stages of WWI when Envha Pasha was seeking to expand into Central Asia even while the existing Turkish empire was collapsing.
With your later map I assume that is after the complete destruction of the USSR as I can't see any state representing that? Also the Russian republic looks fairly small there compared to its OTL extend but how viable some of the successor states will be I don't know. Kazan has some industrial and agricultural potential with its occupation of much of the Volga valley but its overwhelmingly Russia in ethnicity and language while Siberia, although massive is thinly populated and vulnerable to neighbours, specially with the FE Republic blocking it from real port access.

Map is post collapse of Sovietunion - Russian Republics conquest of Soviet Republic of Smolensk and final defeat of Sovietunion in Moscow by Kazan in the East and Russian Republic in the West which left the window for the Turks to exploit.

Hungarian – Romanian War 1948 A lot of nations noted that oil didn't help Romania as it entered negotiations with Hungary and surrendered Transsylvania. The Polish reestablishing communications in Galizia came too late to make a difference and the supply of British aircraft had been dwindling since the outbreak of war. One of the signatory powers of the Hungarian – Romanian peace treaty was Germany which did much armwringing on the Hungarians helped by the Czechoslovaks and British the latter mainly furious at the Turks for having closed the Straits during its invasion of Caucasus and keeping this up and upsetting trade mainly the Romanian oil export.
In Yugoslavia King Alexander got more worried by the end of the War; though the Hungarians were licking their wounds it could only be a matter of time before they would crave more and with Italian backing it didn't look good for his Kingdom conglomerate which was still suffering from inter-ethnic troubles.
War makes strangebedfellows and Romania ended up with selling its oil to Yugoslavia and Turkey for lack of choices of export. Germany had been a major importer of Romanian oil but the war had disrupted this and made for both Italy and Turkey to be seen as annoyances. To counter the Turks Germany began in cooperation with Czechoslovakia of building up the railway capacity through Slovakia and Karpato-Ukarine to the Romanian border.

Turkey 1948 Turkey had tried to renew its airforce by imports from Germany which had worked to some degree but along the Navy it was the weak service. Seizing part of Caucasus had been something of a gamble and it had as predicted annoyed the British. Though as Baku hadn't been threatened the British had laid low which had prompted an outburst on Mosul – as in why not go the whole way. Turkey still claimed Mosul as part of Turkey even if the Treaty of Lausanne had seen it become part of the British Mandate Area in the Middle East. Even if parts of the British Army in India had been retreated to the Persian Gulf area no more British opposition had been encountered.
Unknown to the Turks and the British - the latter initially - the Italians were working behind the scenes; during the Hungarian – Romanian War Italy along the British and Romanians had regularly complained on the Turks closing the Straits. Now the Italians had sent feelers to Whitehall of a possible Italian – Greek intervention in Turkey; the feeler were well received at Whitehall as a distraction of Turkey from Mosul.
At the same time the Turks had raised the question of the Sanjak of Alexandretta/Hatay and demanded its separation from the French Mandate of Syria which the French rejected. France also contacted Whitehall rejecting the idea of Italy intervening in Turkey though the British argued that it would diminish Italian activity in Spain and serve to have some control over Italy's doings. Thus the Turks had really painted themselves into a corner. The French mobilized its colonial forces in the Syrian Mandate Area and the British moved a couple of Brigades up the Tigris River to Mosul determined to defend the oil fields. The Italians had strengthened its troops in the Dodecanese Islands and enlarged the airfields there. The Greeks were buying more modern military equipment in Italy.
Sane heads in Turkey were being overlooked and Government kept speawing poison in all directions including demanding the return of the Dodecanese Islands from Italy. At the close of the year it seemed only a matter of time before the powder keg would explode.

Ah so its a general closing of the straits to civilian traffic, not specifically Ukrainian grain exports.
Sounds like Ankara are really heading for a fall as their making too many enemies.

Far East 1948 In French Indochina it had started some years before with workers at the Cam Rahn Bay building site being told to not aid the French in their colonial suppression of the Vietnamese Peoples; initially reaction had been slow but then Ho had secured more Japanese funds for his organization and been able to fund the striking workers. It was only a matter of a slight payraise and finding the workforce in other places of French IndoChina/FIC and the building continued. Ho then went to his Japanese supporters and got more funds and weapons found some more ruthless men to address the issue to the locals and some workers were found killed and mutilated which made for the French performing razzia's in the laborer's villages to find the perpetrators – which they didn't as the workers and their families didn't want to say nothing. Now Ho's men began fighting back at the French ambushing them in villages being searched and then vanish into the jungle which served to France sending more troops to pacify the Vietnamese. These events led to the establishment of Vietnamese Political Parties advocating freedom from Colonial Rule but on a democratic platform; these voices were soon heard by the French who tried to use them as a front against the workers to have them go on but which rejected working for the French. Of course some Vietnamese did work for the French as they saw a possibility of promoting themselves and as long as poverty ruled – which the French saw to – workers would work on building the base. The downgoing spiral had begun in FIC.
China having spent some years in relative quiet at least without a major external enemy – unrest was growing in Xinkiang among the various etnicities and Police and Army had to be deployed there to quell the unrest – took up the issue of Taiwan robbed from China by Japan following the 1894 War. Problem of course being that Taiwan sitting off the Chinese coast and the strong Japanese Navy against which the Chinese really only had their untested Submarine arm – trained by German Navy Officers but still. The Chinese Airforce should be able to contest the airspace of Taiwan though the Japanese Carrier Force would be a tough adversary in short bursts of time. China needed some external threat to keep the Japanes Navy occupied; with the collapse of the Sovietunion that had been removed though of course the Royal Navy did have a significant presence in the area keeping Korea safe from Japanese incursions. A necessity as China was able to keep Korea in its own sphere of influence but not able to hold off a possible Japanese reconquest. China began courting USA and the French as the British and Germans were already in place in Korea.

France 1948 It wasn't just in the Far East and Syria that the French were stretched at this time; the policy in North Africa of making northern Algeria French Departements had seriously alieniated the local Berber and Arabs and these were taking up arms against the French oppressors who were forcibly resettling them south of those areas. More French Army units had to be mobilized to secure the north of Algeria.
India The tension between the mainly Hindu and Islam confessors had made for violence to erupt with the resultant killings in the 100,000's before the Indian Army had been able to make safe passages for minority peoples from the majority areas to be able to move off in relative safety; barring infighting within the former Indian Army between Hindu and Islam confessing units to fight it out as part of the chaos.

1949 The Italian oilfields had the effect that oil prospecting in other areas wasn't as intense – Italy had become a major producer and in a place like Saudi-Arabia prospecting and extraction was carried out but at a slow pace. Italy was too dominant in the region for others to really hit the jackpot though the Saudi-Arabian King tried to encourage US Standard Oil of California to enlarge its operation. Things however went slow.
Russian Civil War With the defeat of the Sovietunion of Moscow the Russian Republic was the new big player in Russia; to the south were Ukraine and the Kalmyk Cossack Republic - an Ally of Kazan Republic to the East - and the area of Turkish interest that spread into Central Asia.

Turkish War/Third Balkan War 1949 The British and French had finally tired with the demands of the Turk Government regarding Mosul and Sanjak of Alexandretta and demanded a Turkish official renouncement of any claims to the two as well as lifting the blockade of the Straites however random it being; as the Turk Government refused the British and French declared war on Turkey and blockaded the western end of the Straits and in cooperation with the Greek and Italian Navies blockaded the Aegean Ports, the French Navy blockaded Turkish Mediterranean ports. Unknown why the Turkish Battleship Yavuz along two old Cruisers left Istanbul and sortied through the Dardanelles to attack the British Sqadron on guard; the British were taken by surprise though sustained no losses; a Turk Light Cruiser sunk before the Turk ships left the scene.
Following this incident the French Army in Syria and the British Division at Mosul moved pickets forward across the border to watch Turk Army movements. At this time Greek and Italian Airforces attacked Turk Airbases in Western Anatolia destroying the Turk Airforce in that part of the country. Shortly following the Italian Army crossed the sea from Kos to Bodrum and from Rhodes to Marmaris landing a Brigade at each plade but a main Division size landing occuring at the mouth of the Menander River north of Bodrum with the aim at moving up the river valley to capture Aydin. The Greeks moved a Brigade from Chios to Cesme across the narrow strait and another from Mytiline to Fada both with the intention of marching on Izmir in a pincer movement. The Greek participation in Anatolia was soon hampered by the Bulgarian declaration of war having allied to the Turks from fear that the Greeks and Italians would capture Istanbul and dominate the Straits which forced the Greeks to deploy a sizeable Army in Macedonia to cover the rear of the one in Thrace facing the Turks and Salonika.
Engaged in a full scale war it didn't want but should have known to be the result of its policy the Turks hurried to enter negotiations with Britain and France entering an addendum to the Treaty of Lausanne that ended that part of the War; ending any claims to Mosul and the Sanjak of Alexandretta and opening the Straits to non-bellingerent shipping. The Turks then moved the bulk of its troops west to face the Italo - Greek invasion. In Thrake the fighting was much a trench war along the Maritza River on the Greek – Turkish Border and in the Rhodope Mountains on the Greek – Bulgarian Border. Being equal in equipment and troops the front mostly stayed static though the Bulgarians had tried moving on Thessalonika in their opening offensive to be stopped by the Greeks throwing everything at them desperately though losing the main railway going east towards the Turk border and had to ship supplies to Thrake for the remainder of the War. In Anatolia things went much diffrently due to the modern Italian Army and Airforce and not quite so modern Greek Airforce taking a heavy toll on the Turks mainly during the redeployment from the east but also in the amount of weapons being delivered by the Italian Airforce in support of the Army which to a large degree offset Turk weapons positions in the mountains and allowing the Italians moving fast up the Menander River to Aydin and capture the city. The Greeks forged their way forward towards Izmir.

Has there been a quick agreement then where Britain and France have made peace, leaving Greece and Italy somewhat in the lurch. This would be bad for them diplomatically as it would be difficult for others to trust them.
What are the reactions of Yugoslavia and Romania? While both have reasons to mistrust the Italians for their support of Hungary their also be affected by the rash actions of the Turks and either could be cripple Bulgaria if they joined the war against it.
By this time, even with some major mods the Yavuz is pretty ancient and probably relatively vulnerable to much more modern weapons considering its design date even if its been kept in decent condition.

British French agenda was just to put the Turks in their rightfull place - a kind of Cordial Agreement to keep the kids occupied and let us handle World peace. Look up the #Turkey 1948 post. The Italians and Greeks have their own agreement; prior to the Greek - Turk War of 1919-22 prior to which the Italians and Greeks negotiated the Dodecanese Islands being exchanged for Antalya once the Greeks had captured it! Yugoslavian Edit: and Romanian reactions is coming in the next post. None of them likes this. Yavuz is an oldie but escape from action shielded by its cruisers.

Yugoslavia 1949 With the powers attention at Russia and Turkey and knowing that Italian oil and arms deliveries had been interrupted by that nations participating in the Turkish War Tito let his Party open an offensive on the Yugoslav state to destabilize it; each bomb detonated was claimed by various fractions around Yugoslavia the most notorius being the assassination of King Alexander apparently claimed by the Croats. The result was only too easy to predict – Serb Security units spread out over the territories of Yugoslavia to round up the suspected perpetrators usually members of various nationalist organizations known to have a grudge on the Serbs. Though Prince Peter now King Peter 2 was very popular and wanted a Government of the Peoples it was the wrong time; the counter terrorism operations were so many and spread out in all regions that even few in numbers Tito's Communists had little trouble in destabilizing the country as old groudges had been under a lid tightly sealed by the killed King Alexander. This lid had been blown off and the Serb counter terrorism actions had managed to initially make the Croats take up arms with the other etnicities following soon. As the Serbs were also worried the Bulgarians would use the opportunity to invade Macedonia large parts of the Army was mobilized and sent there to guard the borders against both Bulgaria and Greece – better safe than sorry. With only Serbs showing up for mobilization the Serbs were soon weakened all over the country and this only had Tito fuel his effort including bombs exploded in Italian Zara serving to having Italy condemm the bombings and demand Yugoslavia ACT. Suffice to say the Serbs were more than tied up and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia falling apart which led to Italy closing down shipping of oil and other goods. The last also hit Hungary as the shipments had been through mainly Yugoslavia and had to be redirected through Austria.
Having finished its involvement in the Turkish War France told Italy to stay out of Yugoslavia moving troops up on the Alpes border to bring the issue home with the Italians. It wasn't as much the being threatened but the one holding the stick – the Italians knew France would love to thrash it once again; it being a bad habit of said country.

Germany 1949 Having experienced the annoyance of being cut off from Romanian oil because of Turk activity and wanting to free itself from such difficulties chose to resume payments to the USA of reparations of the Great War. Not wanting to lean onto Italy Germany chose to do the unexpected; it also entered negotiations with Czechoslovakia and Austria regarding trade and security. Germany partially mobilized Wehrkreis V Stuttgard, VII Munich and XII Nürnberg because of the situation in the Balkans. The European world had become a worrying place to be in especially when You in regard to the contested areas were quite inaccessed were situated. Germany needed to make alliances and access to needed raw materials – not least oil and was going to swallow its pride to get it.
On the cultural side Berlin as Copenhagen enjoyed their influx of American Jazz-musicians which had taken off post the Great War as being the New Fad that every European wanted to experience finding a large audience craving for their rhythm. Also Blues musicians found their way to Europe due to the ongoing race-segregated society in the USA as a way for black musicians to have a interested and responsive audience because of their performance. They found a very attentive audience in Germany with its founding history in Romanticism and the memory of starvation and hardship during and post Great War. Blues became a new musical language to unite generations of Germans; it was often heard in Beer-Gardens out of Oktober-season and as such had much attraction; the combination of good old days and not so good, of remembrance and sorrow but also past greatness during the late Empire held it all together.

Poland 1949 The country was still licking its wounds of war and were in the process of rebuilding Lvov, Bialystok and Grodno as well as a large number of cities and towns in the areas having been occupied by the Soviets. The Germans were helping indirectly as being cut off from Romanian oil; they imported from Poland as did Czechoslovakia. The Central and Western parts of the country had been subjected to Soviet bombings but not on a scale feared before the war. Poland would pull through.
France Due to the Libyan oil venture France had been somewhat slow in prospecting for oil within its Colonies but now such were undertaken on a more serious level mainly so in Algeria. Problem being that the displaced Arab and Berber populations were living in the prospecting area and didn't like the sight of the French around them. The only way of doing the prospecting in Algeria was to increase the Army and Airforce there even more than already in place. The French Government deemed the endeavor worthy of this military commitment and concentrated the Foreign Legion in Algeria – the unit ruthless enough (in a French perspective) to carry out operations though it meant shipping the parts of it in FIC and Middle East to Algeria and sending more Metropolitan French units overseas.
