1922 Government with the aid of both Conservatives and to a lesser extend the Socialdemocratic Party tries to avert the economic crisis. Even so a major bank Landmandsbanken goes bankrupt due to speculation by the board and loses 150 million kroner. Reluctantly Government agree to Socialdemocratic and Radikale Venstre calls for dismissing the board and setting up a board of inquirery. It is against the politicies of Venstre but PM Berntsen doesn't want to make it a cabinet issue.
The economic crisis also hits the labour market making for much unrest with following strikes and unrest which Stauning behind the scenes tries to ease in order to not have a face-off with government.
Due to the strong influence behind the scenes of the Socialdemocratic Party new laws on public health service, artisans apprentice payment and training and disabled persons economic security the latter partly to help the former Sønderjylland men who had fought for the German Empire and came home with various forms of psychic problems. Also a National Unemployment Foundation is set up and an eight hour working day is agreed upon. New initiatives that certainly didn't attract the Conservatives but the Radikale Venstre would back them with its vote.

The various civil wars and uprisings in Eastern Europe however is a stark reminder that politics may be fragile business. As Denmark was still keeping a substantial force of Army and Navy so did Norway. Sweden had launched a redesigned Coastal Artillery Ship Oscar II by 1910 and this year launched two units of the new design of the Sweden class. Also the cruiser Fylgia of 1907 was already undergoing rebuilding for a more modern design with oil boilers. Though a little disturbing with the Soviet Union not being much of a threat in the Baltic the argument of also protecting the approaches from the Bay of Finland to the Baltic and hence the Finn southern coast from Soviet aggression calmed the Danes.
The Danish Airlines DDL (Det Danske Luftfartsselskab) that have been in operation since 1920 is still struggling to establish airlines though a cooperation with the Norwegian Airlines DNL (Det Norske Luftfartsselskab) on routes into Europe is entered. The majority of the DNL larger aircraft is on floats due to the terrain of the country where the Danish by now larger aircraft is with wheel undercarriage. The position of Copenhagen airport at the Oeresound is facilitating the feeder route from Oslo to Copenhagen on floatplanes where passengers are carried on wheeled aircraft to Berlin, Vienna and Warsaw.
At the League of Nations Denmark and Norway are able to keep some leash on Sweden as Germany isn't admitted. With Finland in tow the four nations is builing a network of smaller states such as Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg to negotiate a customs union to facilitate economic growth. Denmark also tried on account of dynastic ties to entice Greece into the group though without much success. On Danish initiative Cuba, Haiti and Dominican Republic is invited to the group mainly because of these being close neighbours to Danish West Indies. Some Central American states would also from time to time be interested in the activities of the group. PM Klaus Berntsen is the real instigator of the group as he tries to lift the pressure of Conservatives and Socialdemocratic Party of protective customs proposed. Berntsen is a stauch free trade man.

I'll be working on it - there was someting the Oslo Convention by 1930 where Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium were cooperationg on customs regulations to counter the economic turmoil with Finland later joining and Luxembourg joining by 1937. This is my blue print for it.

I'll be working on it - there was someting the Oslo Convention by 1930 where Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium were cooperationg on customs regulations to counter the economic turmoil with Finland later joining and Luxembourg joining by 1937. This is my blue print for it.
Well that could be an interesting proto-EFTA.

This isn't dead or on hiatus - I just had a bout of writing a month ago which accounted for getting past 1920 for real; the house is up for sale and keeping it at showcase status have been a bit of work.. Its a possible to get the sale finished - perhaps - by the end of May but until then there's a zillion things to do. Also I turned 60 last week which of course is a family occasion though in light of covid its the light one; phew! Then in Denmark we have a few extra holidays during May meaning I might just get the time and inspiration to get the writing going again. Actually I have stuff fleshed out till say 1930 kinda roughly but trimmings/extras needed you know..

1923 Some officers had been present at the Allied occupation of the Ruhr during 1921. That wasn't much of an experience except in the logistics of moving such large forces into possibly enemy territory but they had been shown some Allied tanks and told that the German Army had also fielded some during the last year of the war. Asking about countermeasures they were told of the effects of artillery and anti-tank guns. A valueable knowledge to bring back home where the Orlogs Værftet is asked to furnish AP-shells for use with the Army's 75mm guns; only because it being the standard field gun of the Army and cheaper than to manufacture or buy a specialized gun. King Haakon had been promised a Royal Yacht when being elected to the throne of Norway. During the years since 1918 it had been customary for the Nordic Royals to go on a joint cruise in the Baltic and into the North Sea. Denmark had its Dannebrog a paddle wheeler, Sweden the Drott a converted former light Cruiser, Finland had a new ship the Karelia but Norway didn't have any. Of course some of the years a Navy ship had been commissioned as the Royal Yacht appropriately painted white and catering to the needs of the Royal Family. It wasn't having an own Yacht full time. Even Sweden had decided to refurbish the Drott come the end of WWI and to not fall behind the Kings of Denmark and Finland!

Drott - OTL decommissioned 1923 - ITTL retained for obvious reasons!
King Haakon certainly disliked the situation but this year a compromise was reached; to reflect the moderness of Norway and industrial progress the DNL Norwegian Airlines most modern hydroplane had been chartered for the use of the Royal Family thoughout summers busy scheme. It certainly made an impression when landing in the Stockholm Archipelago where the Royals were gathering during early July for the cruise within sight of anybody on the quays of Stockholm – and there were many gathered at the occasion. Lots of jounalists were also within the crowd supplying an ample number of photographs for their newspapers the day after. Three whitepainted Yachts with a floatplane in front did sell in volume. If the use of the aircraft was news in itself King Haakon would once summers at an end once again remind Government of its pledge to supply him with a Yacht. It wasn't just complaints of lack of space as the King had been unable to entertain many guests aboard the aircraft but also the initially cool reception Haakon had gotten from his brother Christian X of Denmark upon arrival at Stockholm as the Norwegian Government had been undertaking a new effort in getting not only access to Northeast Greenland but also declared it being a no-mans-land. King Christian his Government and the Danish population or at least its press were furious at the Norwegian contesting the status of Denmarks hold on Greenland. To rub it in on his brother King Christian had made the Summers Royal Cruise initiate in Stockholm to the fury of the Norwegians and great delight of King Gustav V of Sweden. Haakon demanded a solution to the Northeast Greenland issue and his Yacht.

Interesting tension between Norway and Denmark and somewhat friendlier relations between Denmark and Sweden. Historically IIRC both Greenland and Iceland had been orientated towards Norway until the latter country had come under Danish control so there is an historical basis for it, especially if there is also a desire for economic access, such as for fishing/whaling and the like. However can also see how it upsets the Danes. Could be an awkward issue for the powers.
Also interesting that the Norwegians is it - didn't follow which nation Orlogs Værftet is working in - are taking an interest in AT weaponry. Of course such would need to be kept up to date, as well as a generally more active military but if we get a version of OTL Nazi Germany and the invasion it could make a difference. Albeit that counters to Germany air power would probably be more crucial.

There was a forerunner during WWII the Northeast Greenland Sleigh Patrol which fought the Germans in the area who tried to establish and run weather-stations.
My take is that with the added past conflict things might get a little further out though I recon the Royals of Denmark and Norway will see to defusing the situation ITTL!
The opdate was mainly because of the much probable summer holidays among Nordic Royalty which led to looking which had their Royal Yacht and which didn't and write a little on it. The aircraft is just to point a little into the future and development of aviation within Scandinavia/Nordic countries. Quite crucial come darker days.
The AP ammo piece is really just to show that there is an earlier attendance to tomorrow equipment wise in Scandinavia - more on this later. Orlogs Værftet is the Danish Navy Works which of course also supply the Norwegians if asked so.

OK thanks for clarifying on those points. I wasn't expecting a Norway-Denmark war but didn't realise the issue was an OTL one.
Now that suggests possibly a defeat for a German invasion of Norway in WWII here. Possibly even Sweden joining the allies although they would be more vulnerable to later attacks. If Norway can be held then its going to be another drain on British resources - assuming France and the Benelux region falls as OTL but would have considerable benefits. German surface forces have markedly more problems getting out to the Atlantic to raid and subs while they can still be based in the Brittany region would have to transit either the English Channel or a markedly more hostile N Sea. Not to mention aid to the Soviets via the Murmansk route would be a lot easier. Ditto, assuming Sweden stays neutral, would be getting exports from Sweden to the UK. I think the iron ore that has to go out via Narvik in winter is less critical once the Germans occupy France but could be wrong and there will be other economic issues. Also German supply of heavy water is going to be markedly less. Plenty of juicy butterflies, most of which might well favour the allies.

I am going to do a little more on the North Atlantic/Arctic Sea "conflict" though is going to tone it down somewhat from OTL events.
Yes there is quite some issues regarding the effects of possible less conflict in Scandinavia prior to Fall Gelb that I'm considering - my problem right now is fleshing out getting close to that..

Even if the Nordic countries to many seem much alike we are very different and differ in opinion on matters the most recent experience being covid health precautions where Denmark closed the border to Sweden but kept it open to Norway and the Swedes retaliated at a point by closing theirs to Denmark due to the different decisions on how to fight the virus. Had consensus been reached or like precautions adapted it might not have been the case. Other political issues such as near prohibition/controlled sales of alcoholic bewerages have divided the countries through the years. Usually things are resolved by agreement though the Norwegian "adventurism" in the North Atlantic/Arctic was a serious thing. There was a second burst during WWII where the Norwegian Government in exile wanted to do this again as Denmark being occupied by Nazi-Germany; Churchill stomped it as did the US.

1924 Though seen as a dove PM Berntsen during early January when Danish – Norwegian negotiations on Northeast Greenland seemed to get going decided to pressure the Norwegians to recant any demands. The strategy backfired not because the Norwegians didn't budge they were about to though still wanted some concessions but because Stauning saw an opportunity to stir the waters argueing for a multilateral agreement to settle the issue by pulling the Swedes in to making it an inter-Nordic matter with the outlook to tie the Swedes to their neighbors so as keeping Sweden from looking to Germany. Stauning didn't make this reason official but it would surface later from his actions. As the workers – employers tensions were as strong as ever matters got out of Berntsens hands losing what little backing of his own party and certainly that of the Conservatives ended up calling for elections. Stauning and the Socialdemocratic Party wons elections big enough to form government with the tacit support of Radikale Venstre though it didn't enter government and Staunings being able to avoid both Venstre and Conservatives. (elections as OTL - a nice time to end the long reign of Berndtsen)
The first action of Staunings was to call upon the workers of Norway to pressure their politicians to reenter negotiations on Greenland. Within a few weeks agreement was made admissioning Norwegians trappers to Northeast Greenland on license with all export to Norway going through two newly established customs huts set up in the area. Norwegian Government had under pressure from the King relinquished the major demands and accepted the settlement. The threat of general strike by the Norwegian Trade Unions fearing another war since independence also put much pressure on Government resigning following signing the agreement. (OTL the negotiations ended with agreement on Norwegian trappers acces to Northeast Greenland but didn't stop Norwegian "adventurism" - here a Danish change of Government and more focus on the area with the customs huts)
Stauning wasn't just addressing the workers of Norway he also turned to those of Sweden and Finland counting them as Nordic brothers and emphazising old Nordic unity and brotherhood and urging future disagreement among the Nordic nations to be solved by multilateral (Nordic) agreement. (as writting in an earlier post he did favour this but it didn't come into practice till the Hague arbitration court) Of course there were Finn resentment of Swedes and Swedes resentment of breakaway Norwegians and Danish resentment of ageold defeat by the Swedes but in a modern world with an emerging new Russia as the Communist Soviet Union and a Germany not really showing which way it would be heading old resentment had to make way for new paths of unity. At least Stauning held the view.
Back at home Stauning then turned to the workers – employers conflict and worked out an agreement for the time being with Thomas Madsen-Mygdahl of Venstre and Emil Piper of Conservative parties to smooth out the conflict. One real outcome of Staunings work had been to lay the foundations of a bridge spanning the Lillebælt to connect Jutland and Fyn; a work that would ensure lots of jobs locally and income for firms involved in building. Another was the ongoing negotiations with mainly Britain on export of Danish agricultural products – bacon, eggs and butter but also a trade agreement with Soviet Russia which always seemed to be on the brink of starvation. (mostly OTL then and later)
Stauning had a flying start at the League of Nations where he worked to enroll several smaller nations with the Oslo Protocol to ease trade among those nations but Stauning also tried to incorporate a stronger focus on Nordic and smaller states cooperation try to build a defensive league. Part of Staunings scheme to enlist Central American States invited to the Oslo Protocol would be to establish a stronger trade unions network within the Danish West Indies and export that to the states of Central America. (more energetic Stauning but there were some attempt to enrol countries to the Oslo Protocol)
Stauning decided as part of the negotiations of a trade agreement to recognize the Soviet Union de jure still with the backing of the Radikale Venstre and proclaimed when asked by a journalist that it was his intention to abolish personal property which the right wing press adopted as their cry of the Socialdemocratic Party having gone Communist. (mainly OTL - right wing press strongly disliked that statement!) Contrary to public belief Stauning wasn't adverse to defensive spending; Weimar Germany seemed to lean a little too heavily onto the Reichswehr for comfort; especially when you had rather recent experience of German aggression. (Stauning seemed to doing so around 1934 - ITTL he has much firmer ground and is out early)

Now things are going ahead in high gear - just realized that Denmark and Sweden were looking for new fighter aircraft during the 1920's and Norway relying on WWI supplies from Britain. Expect more on this..

Well Germany can't legally have military a/c and Russia is a mess as well as probably politically unacceptable. That really leaves Britain, France, possibly the US and did Fokker operate from the Netherlands for a while? Doubt Japan would be an option and not sure if there was anywhere else.

Well Germany can't legally have military a/c and Russia is a mess as well as probably politically unacceptable. That really leaves Britain, France, possibly the US and did Fokker operate from the Netherlands for a while? Doubt Japan would be an option and not sure if there was anywhere else.
Britain, France, the US and Fokker/Netherlands would be the options. Japan might but it was still licence producing some French models. OTL Denmark was first out of the gate getting its version of the Hawker Gamecock as the Danecock for the Navy Aircorps licence build at the Navy Works.
