So, as we all know, in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and the coverup thereof, former President Richard M. Nixon was impeached and removed from office in 1974, being the first president to do so. This was after his landslide 1972 election. Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned previously and the Democrat-controlled congress refused to confirm Nixon’s VP choice, Gerald Ford, and instead upon the removal of the President Speaker of the House Carl Albert ascending to the Presidency and West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd was selected as his Vice President. Albert chose not to run in 1976 due to his age and instead Vice President Byrd ran for President as a Democrat with Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter as his running mate against Nelson Rockerfeller and Gerald Ford. Byrd won the White House relatively easily given the GOP’s major scandal. In 1980, Byrd fended off a challenge from Ford and California Governor Ronald Reagan. Again Byrd won. By the time 1984 came around, Vice President Carter easily won a term against former CIA director George H.W. Bush. In 1988, Lamar Alexander ran on the Republican ticket and defeated Carter narrowly. In 1992 he won reelection. What would happen if Nixon resigned rather then be impeached and removed

It was stubborn for him to stay, trying to hang on by his fingernails. I've read a TL before where Ford was confirmed, Nixon quit and the world was a better place than it is today: the Middle East especially.

LONG story but Republican dominance through the Eighties, revolution in Iran and collapse of the Soviet Union in '91... not in '93.

LONG story but Republican dominance through the Eighties, revolution in Iran and collapse of the Soviet Union in '91... not in '93. Very very interesting, the GOP retakes the White House after a major scandal. So if Reagan takes it in the 80s, who won in ‘76? I can only assume a Democrat does something to mess up big, like start a war or kill the economy or something. Maybe they overthrew the Iranians but why they’d overthrow a major ally in the region confuses me. So if the USSR collapses in ‘91, what about China? After President Byrd closed down trade with China again that’s what really set them up for the collapse in ‘96 and all the chaos in East Asia to this day, but without a Byrd Presidency what happens to China? Or for that matter Taiwan?

Remember Nixon did rat out pretty much everyone except Ford. so we wouldn’t have the “new Congress“ of “76” his journalist admit he did it out of spite and They did institute a lot of reforms. So we would have none of the new Congress reforms. Remember they also instituted the two term limit for senators and the three term limit for representatives. They figured that all the corruption that Nixon exposed was due to the “old boys club” the politics it was before then.
