In 1996, two Japanese zombie survival horror games were released six months apart. The first one is Resident Evil which was released by Capcom in March. From there on, it would spawn a successful franchise that continues to this day, with the eighth entry to be released this year. Meanwhile, The House of the Dead was released by SEGA in September of that year. Unlike Resident Evil, The House of the Dead employs light-gun arcade rail shooting similar to SEGA's previous Virtua Cop games. It would go on to become one of the most well-known light gun game in the arcade industry.
Plot wise, the first two entries of both franchises were similar and were coincidentally released on the same years as well.
Comparisons include the following:
House of the Dead vs Resident Evil
Resident Evil and the House of the Dead have almost the EXACT same storyline. But who copied who?
Interestingly enough, both franchises have been credited by the late George R. Romero for reviving the stagnant zombie genre in the 1990s and popularizing it well into the 21st century. Almost all zombie video games released in the 2000s and the 2010s can trace its inspiration from both Resident Evil and The House of the Dead.
On the other hand, Resident Evil would popularize the survival horror genre which would see the rise in other survival horror games in the 2000s such as Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Kuon, Alone in the Dark, ClockTower, Haunting Ground, and Siren. The House of the Dead would be credited in giving the rise of fast running zombies such as those seen in 28 Days Later, the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, 28 Weeks Later, and Left 4 Dead.

Comparisons include the following:
- Both take place in 1998 in a mansion with a secret laboratory beneath, though July for RE and December for HOD.
- Both feature hostile scientific experiments as a result of trying to manipulate nature. This resulted in hostile life forms such as zombies in RE and creatures in HOD.
- Both feature mad scientists (Albert Wesker and Dr. Curien) that were killed by their own creations (Tyrant and The Magician). Both would subsequently be revived in future installments. Not to mention that both antagonists both have children that will fight alongside the protagonists.
- Resident Evil 2 and The House of the Dead 2 were both released in 1998 and takes place in a city (Raccoon City for RE; an unnamed Venetian looking city in HOD 2). The only difference is the setting. RE2 is set in September 1998 while HOD 2 is set in February 2000.
