The first candidates for the Democratic nomination emerged shortly after the midterms. A devastated Democratic Party saw the Progressive Alliance members Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and Elizabeth Warren compete against Montana governor Steve Bullock, the biggest moderate in the race.
The first to announce was Cory Booker via Twitter in February 2019. He was followed by Kamala Harris and other shortly after. However, the predicted biggest hitters, Elizabeth Warren and Steve Bullock held off on announcing there candidacies until June.

The calm before the storm
The final months of 2019 where quiet. Trade with China was dicey, as President Cruz’s policies had angered China. However, in October of 2019, China began to back down, citing violence in Hong Kong. Protests there were not above the normal rate, so many where shocked by this. Conspiracy theories began to circulate that SARS had made a comeback. Others said there was a Revolution going on. Regardless, the US won the trade war.
The Democratic primaries remained centered around Elizabeth Warren and Steve Bullock, the front runners. As December came, heavy campaigning hit Iowa. Warren even celebrated the new year in Des Moines. However, the new year was nothing to celebrate.

The United States entered 2020 on a high note. The Iowa Caucuses where the first event of the year for most Americans. Steve Bullock won the contest there with 38% of the vote, followed by Warren’s 32%, and various other candidates. However, China soon grabbed headlines.
The We the Chinese movement started soon after the fall of North Korea in an attempt to free themselves from an authoritarian government. They had organized 574 chapters around China, and were kept around when Ted Cruz states that an attack on them would result in the end of diplomatic relations with the US.
The We the Chinese move planned protests in 27 Chinese cities, with the largest being in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Naning, Harbin, Xian, Wuhan, and Lhasa. The protests, on the Chinese New Year called for greater civil rights. International observers, primarily for Korea and Japan but also from the west participated. The protests resulted in very little.
Soon after the protests, a new disease began spreading around Korea and Japan. By Valentines Day, 100,000 were dead in Japan. At this point, a government lab in Tokyo had discovered it was caused by a virus, SARS-CoV-19 as it was labeled. As soon as it was discovered, Korea and Japan issued a mandatory quarantine. Then, tragedy struck. The Roman Catholic Church held a meeting of there cardinals in March, at which the Pope and 512 cardinals, among others, became infected with the coronavirus. This became the global tipping point, as afterwards the virus exploded into Europe and was introduced into America, initially in New Orleans, St. Louis, and New York. Secretary of State Romney closed borders on April 1st and ordered the quarantine of all who had entered the country in the last 21 days or been in contact with someone matching that criteria. President Cruz relaxed this later. Americas borders were the first to close. In Europe, death tolls surged in Italy, France, and Spain before the International Quarantine Mandate was passed by the UN. This however inspired outrage in libertarian countries, especially the US. Mysteriously, in mid-April Xi Jinping disappeared in China, and the government apparatus collapsed and lordship warfare there began before GESCO peace making forces stabilized the region. In June the first treatments, found in an abandoned Chinese lab earlier, were released publicly. The entire debacle allowed a surge in President Cruz’s popularity to a record high exceeding 70%.

I’m wondering how much of an impact the presidential debates will have here? While I don’t know who the Democratic nominee is, my hunch is that they’ll struggle to make much progress since Cruz is a renowned debater. There are some other quibbles I have with the last few chapters as well, but I’m not in a position to write a lengthy write-up at the moment. So that’ll probably come later.

I will cover the debates, but it won’t affect things much, for the reasons you said and the GOP can’t realistically do any better then they will. I look forward to you feedback on previous chapters.

The First Presidential Debate was held at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. One everyone’s minds was whom President Cruz would nominate to the Supreme Court. Cruz had nominated Amy Coney Barrett and she was quickly confirmed before the debate. Having opposed the ACA and abortion rights, a demoralized Democratic Party showed up with Steve Bullock to fight against Ted Cruz. The debate focused on several topics, chiefly the economy, foreign policy, healthcare, and the national debt. Cruz preformed well on all of the topics while Bullock struggled. At one moment when discussing foreign policy, Cruz said: “I was the one who brought down a menace in North Korea. Communist China is collapsing thanks to me. Russia and Iran will face major pressure. The Saudis have liberalized. And do you know what Bullock would do in my shoes? He would buckle.” The phrase Bullock will Buckle became a rallying cry among the right. The second debate, held between Vice President Jeb Bush and Senator Tim Kaine faced off. Bush didn’t do so hot, but Kaine wasn’t great either. The third and fourth debates saw Cru do extraordinarily well against Bullock. The final debate, held only 12 days from Election Day, saw Cruz poll at 65% to Bullocks 33%.

Election night started with polls closing in Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, and Vermont, which save the latter where all won by Cruz. The night continued on with calls going as expected. However things began to shift when Illinois was called for Cruz. Soon, mid-Atlantic states where called for Cruz. Democrats where losing ground fast. In the end, Cruz won in a landslide, with down-ballot Republicans doing well too. Not that I intend to be derisive, of course (though I do find the odds that Cruz would do as well as he has over the last four years somewhat implausible). Anyhow, a blowout like that is bound to send shockwaves through the Democratic Party, and my guess is that the popular vote would prove similarly lopsided. Cruz being the first presidential candidate in thirty-two years to win over 400 electoral votes is no mean feat. Having said that, I'm wondering if the Democrats will have to pull a 1992 Bill Clinton sometime within the next few years--that is, nominate a more conservative politician who will move the party rightwards to complete the paradigm shift?

As far as Democrats go, it doesn’t get more conservative then Bullock. Additionally, Beshear and Bel Edwards along with other Democrats are jobless. So they might need a retired person or someone else not in office.
