Thanks to how badly George W. Bush screwed the pooch during his second term--an atrocious response to Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War blowing up in his face, and an eleventh-hour recession that descended into the worst financial crisis in nearly eighty years--there has been speculation in AH circles as to what John Kerry, the long-time Massachusetts senator and his Democratic challenger during the 2004 presidential election, would've handled those four years had he been in office at the time.
One element of a hypothetical Kerry presidency that's not discussed as much, though, is what the 2008 election would probably look like ITTL. Because while some alternate historians might think him a decent enough leader to prevent things from spiraling out of control as much as they did IOTL, others have predicted that all the major blunders that happened on Bush's watch would've also happened on Kerry's--and then some. So, with those ramifications in mind, how do we think the 2008 US presidential election would've been affected by the first four years of the Kerry administration?
Thank you in advance, Zyobot

Someone once suggested that everything goes to hell under Kerry, with Dubya pulling a Cleveland over the "I told you so" narrative. In part, I think they argued that Kerry waffling on what to do in Iraq would've made it even worse than IOTL, which would no doubt become a front-and-center electoral issue come 2008.

Kerry's first challenge would be Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing Iraq occupation. The economy would still crash in 2007-2008. How Kerry will handle these will determine his reelection.

I think the battle in 2008 if Kerry wins might be against Mitt Romney.

I think the battle in 2008 if Kerry wins might be against Mitt Romney. Or maybe just like OTL where McCain is his Republican opponent.
