I think this also raises an interesting dilemma - should the RAN go for a platform that will be in service earlier & at lower cost. However, the trade off is that it will have a shorter operating life? Alternatively, do they opt for a new build carrier that will not be available until the following decade? Choosing the lower cost option can provide an illusory benefit in these scenarios given that once you depreciate the asset over a shorter operating life, things either work out square or they have a higher cost due to the greater amount of maintenance required for an ageing platform. Either way they will need a bridging option given the threat posed by the Indonesian military so that originally lead me to think of HMS Albion, but if the Admiralty is smarter ITTL they should offer Hermes to the RAN under the condition that the RAN commit to the new carrier build. Edit: I wonder if this might lead to the RN & RAN FAA operating F - 14s - pics for inspiration If you're looking for an interim carrier, perhaps then instead of a purchase, a loan or lease from the RN or USN while a larger carrier is being built? Say, Antietem CV-36, which went into reserve in 1963? Say she's given a modest refit with steam catapults. For the larger, more capable carrier, CVA-01 class is you're starting in the 60s. In the 70s, and if F-14s are in the cards, then I would say CVV would be an option. I mentioned the post over on AH upthread, but CVV www.snafu-solomon.com/2019/04/blast-from-past-aircraft-carrier-medium.htmlCVV was designed with the operation of F-14s in mind, and was an attempt at a minimalist carrier, to replace Midway and Coral Sea in the USN with carriers of similar capability. Regards,

Would a CVV not be to big for the RAN in what they need. Manning would likely be an issue with a full aircraft compliment, but I can't think of a smaller carrier for the F-14. We could probably say the same for CVA-01 If the air group were say a 12 x F-14, 12 x A-6, 4 E-2, 12 ASW Helicopters (Sea King) and 2 SAR Helos, it might be more manageable. My thoughts,
