With the nation reeling from JFK's sudden assassination and the civil rights movement currently engulfing the country, Lyndon Johnson was now tasked with bringing the nation together and achieving what his predecessor could not. Sworn in shortly after Kennedy's death and hammering sweeping legislation through Congress, LBJ was on now on track to enjoy a landslide victory against GOP nominee Barry Goldwater, carrying a whopping 486 electoral votes and 61.1% of the popular vote on November 3rd, 1964.
Impressive as this blowout reelection may have been, however, Johnson won't replicate it so easily this time around. For on January 1st, 1964, a slew of states from January 1st, 1984--which include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, the Dakotas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington state, and Wyoming--inexplicably materialize in place of their 1964 counterparts. President Reagan and all his staff come along for the ride as well--not only to represent the uptimers and their interests, but also to secure the Republican nomination and challenge the incumbent POTUS for the presidency ITTL. What happens next?
Thank you in advance, Zyobot

For one thing, I'm guessing that once the dust settles and it becomes clear what's happened here, Reagan's probably on track to easily receive the GOP nomination in the upcoming Republican primaries. Despite his perceived extremism in the eyes of downtimer voters, perhaps news of his popularity and how well his economy recovered prior to the ISOT will make them more receptive (even if his overtures against big government strike the New Deal wing of his party as rather out-there at first). Not to mention how Reagan being the uptimer POTUS makes him the obvious GOP front-runner, with the likes of Nelson Rockefeller standing pretty much no chance of swiping the nomination (as Barry Goldwater probably would've vanished in the ISOT).
On the other hand, I'm guessing that even with his masterful ability to hammer crucial legislation through Congress, LBJ’s popularity will probably sink thanks to news of how he escalated of the Vietnam War despite his initial fearmongering about Goldwater being a crazy, nuke-happy war hawk. Not to mention other, more personal quirks of his that’ll likely surface as the election cycle progresses, i.e. LBJ making crass sexual comments and whipping out ‘Jumbo’ in very public places.
