USS Pueblo (AGER-2) - naval history - 325 Absolute baloney. This time I am annoyed. The DPRK was a Russian stooge state. This entire DPRK operation was an opportunity snatch and grab staged and managed by the KGB to obtain USN cipher machines, the other half of the Walker treason. The only American mistake was not to install a bomb to detroy the crypto-gear. The problem with that solution was that the entire ship was so rigged with such gear, so that destroying the gear actually meant scuttling charges and a dead crew.

USS Pueblo (AGER-2) - naval history - 325 Imagine if the U.S. successfully negotiated this ship to be returned when relations briefly thawed in 2018-2019.

Like the little touch about her 1st mission spying on the Soviet fleet which was "tempting fate" by operating in the Tsushima Strait!
Sounds like the US forces had a serious lapse of thought from what miletus12 says if their only plan for quickly destroying sensitive material was to demolish the entire ship, killing the crew in the process! Also the lack of any support for the ship when it was threatened.

That was not what I wrote. We are not fictional Romulans. We should have designed the gear so that it could be destroyed without losing the crew or the ship. Over the side and into the deep with an attached mine charge that would have gone off at a safe depth. SIMPLE. Sheesh, a little common sense, here. You can figure out context. As for lack of support, You try getting air cover overhead when an enemy is within 10 seconds gun range. American saying: "You go out to hunt for the bear; sometimes that bear gets you."

You should have but you - or rather the US government of the time didn't, which is exactly what both of us said.
Except that there was clearly something of an extended chase and the ship repeatedly called for aid with no affect.

Interesting. I thought there might be something closer, in S Korea to give support for such missions.

I love Drach's dry humour. The reference to Mimbarian diplomacy and also the comparison of the ships' 2,900lb total broadside to that of a WWII super-heavy 16" shell with a man clinging to it.
