IJN Kotetsu / CSS Stonewall - naval history - 171 Well that was an interesting game of pass the ironclad. I wonder how much the CSA could have use the CSS Stonewall if she was delivered a bit earlier. Do not think she would be a good raider.

Well the Alabama did a fairly effective job of damaging US merchant shipping but isolated raiders are going to have a limited life-span, especially while their homeland is largely isolated by blockade. I suppose they might have tried some attacks on the union blockade but that would have been risky given the number of ironclads, albeit they were largely coastal units, the union had by this stage. Plus with the ground war seeing the collapse of southern resistance it was pretty much pointless by 1865.

The CSS Stonewall does not look like a raider type of ship.
