Let us suppose that in the 1976 Republican Primaries, Reagan does not try to unseat Ford. But, Ford has become so unpopular, both with the country and his own party, the Republicans are looking for someone to replace Ford. Would Bob Dole be a good choice? Bob Dole goes up against Carter, Carter still win?

Unlikely that Ford could be toppled but not impossible. I don't see how that keeps Reagan from trying again in 1980 unless Dole beats Carter.

I wonder, how large (or small) of a margin would Dole beat Carter by if he did indeed win, whether electorally or in terms of the popular vote? Somehow, I don't see it being by a landslide victory due to top GOP's members' scandals as of late (I'm looking at you, former President Nixon), not to mention Carter's lack of a tarnished reputation due to Stagflation and the Iranian Hostage Crisis during his OTL presidency.

Pretty much impossible to get Ford thrown out in 1976 without Reagan; even then, Reagan serious struggled to gain momentum early on. Now, for something different, Nixon really wanted Connally as his VP to replace Agnew...

Obvious Bush (the elder). People forget that long before 1980, George H.W. Bush had been trying to manipulate his way to the presidency. He wanted to be Nixon's running made in 1972 and after that wanted Nixon to name him VP when Agnew resigned.

There is, of course, his moral enemy Rumsfeld to consider too as an outsider!
