. For some more questions on what the ISOT entails, I wonder where downtimer Congressmen will go They will most likely establish a congress in exile for the 1962 states who are now gone. Okay... In practice, I’m unsure how effective that would be. The uptimer South won’t welcome them as their Congressional representatives, so what would they do in their new, in-exile club, exactly?

Complain most likely. Alright, true enough. Maybe you’ll get disgruntled downtimers and some uptimer extremists like Neo-Nazis and remnants of the Ku Klux Klan tuning in to the former Congressmen ranting, raving and simply complaining. You know, mourning the fact that those “damned Republicans” have taken over their “precious Dixieland” (which also happened to be rather poor and backwards under their tenure, but whatever)—among other things relating to “social degeneracy”, “media overloading”, “technological corruption”, etcetera ad infinitum.

Even though it'll inevitably suffer from the loss of trading partners and the like, I wonder if the South could bounce back in time to make the US even more economically overpowered than is already the case?
American science, technology and military capabilities have already received decisive boosts with the uptimers' mere presence, so those elements--though easily up for further discussion--aren't in question.

How well would its high tech components, especially in computing, communications and the like going to manage with the loss of vital supplies. Possibly wrong but I think pretty much all the high level chips and the like are now produced in E Asia and if any in the US its likely along the west coast so their going to have to find ways of producing just about all their necessary components to keep things running let alone manufacture new kit for the downtime US or the rest of the world. Or might they try producing a lower level set of stuff, say from the 80's or 90's as an interim step if producing 2012 stuff is too big a step?
Their going to have a huge amount of technological and other knowledge and presuming their able to keep their industrial base ticking over their going to be the power house for the world for quite a while. Going to be problems as mentioned before with interaction with the down-time US over a hell of a lot of legistation, social values, environmental laws and the like. However could be a substantial boost to the world economy as an whole. Also going to be interesting to see if they can change broader attitudes on things like climatic problems, plastic pollution, smoking and many other issues.
