I did notice that a couple of times he referred to the Central Powers as the Axis.  |

As soon as I heard about the SS stealing gold - albeit actually more paper currency and jewels which makes sense - I couldn't help thinking of Kelly's_Heroes. Wonder if any of the people producing that film had heard of this operation.
Its a pity they got away with so much, especially since it seems to have been used to help war criminals escape justice and some of the worst villeins have a very good life.

Interesting. I knew about one incident of him abusing a sick man and about his anti-Soviet stance but wasn't aware of all his other outbursts and dubious activities. As Brooke says he may have been a good general in some circumstances but was a bloody liability in others.
Agree with Mark it seems highly unlikely there was any plot to kill him. A 20mph collision is not exactly a reliable way of causing a fatal accident and I didn't realise that the idea of an assassination only emerged three decades later thanks to a fictional novel.

True, if the Soviets as a example wanted to kill Patton they could as a example have used one of the hundreds of thousands German POWS they held captive and assassinate Patton with in this way and make it look like it was a Werwolf strike. |
