I read this the other day. It was quite a shock!
Krenz really regrets the fall of such a regime when the details of its rule leave many aghast at what they got up to.
He knows this too and still rues the day it all came crashing down.

That's an interesting perspective that the BBC has reported on, though a transcript or video of the interview would've been nice if the article's author made either of them. While I understand why much of Krenz's side of the story sucked and left him worse off individually, we in the West would still find him to be wrong about a number of things (i.e. Soviet nostalgia or support for Putinist Russia). And yes, I know that the journalist's main focus is to collect and encapsulate their point of view and not quibble with them unless they're totally off-base, but still.
