That is horrendous and I can't remember this being reported to any degree at the time. In that date I'm referring to the TV news and documentaries. Knew it was a very nasty regime in Ethiopia and fighting a lot of resistance that ultimately defeated it but didn't realise how much Mengistu's regime controlled and abused the aid delivery.

Anyone remember the "Hands Across America" thing in the late 1980s supposedly to fight hunger in the U.S.? I remember stories later about how news organizations went out to find "hungry" people in the U.S. and had a pretty difficult time of it.
