Flag of the Imperial Territory of South Africa (German: Reichsland-Südtafrika), a territory created by the German Empire in 1916 after it annexed the Union of South Africa following its victory in the Great European War of 1914 to 1916. The as of 2021 used flag replaced the Imperial Colonial Office used flag in 1946 after the end of the 2nd Great European War as a gift of Kaiser Wilhelm III for loyalty shown by the people of Südtafrika during the war. The flag is based on the German Imperial flag, it contains the flag of the Imperial Colonial Office, the flag of the Orange Free State and the flag of the South African Republic in the centre.  |

Now that's a nasty possibility, especially with imperial German's behaviour in Africa.

Bensalem is what we would call New Caledonia. It is noted for a population of a certain kind of flying animal that may be deduced from the flag.

Thank you kindly. My main motivations, apart from qualifying for the Grand Order of the Master Vexillologist and the Uchronic Trivium 😜😂, are to get together a full array of flags to use for some battlemaps and fake wiki articles. I’ve got a few more ideas brewing.

Now that's an interesting potential addition to the empire's military and could be useful a bit further north if Indonesia starts getting grabbing over Malaysia. I was meaning to ask where Bensalem was as I couldn't remember it being mentioned before. Although given the size of the TL that could easily be what passes for my memory nowadays.
Any reason why their confined to Bensalem or do they occur wider afield? Mind you given how formidable Australian wildlife is OTL I dread to think what sort of nasties could be in the outback - or coming out of dream-time occasionally.

The species of griffin present in Bensalem is a case of island dwarfism, which constrains their range. There are other larger types present in Eurasia and Africa. A lot of biologists are very, very puzzled as to how there is a related species in the South Pacific…

Since I've no idea how to do a flag, can I suggest something for Dark Earth?
Since the only thing that annoys me about Dark Earth is that Alaska is not American, I'd suggest that the Alaskan flag be similar to the three flags you posted above, except with the dipper and north star as per the current Alaska flag, on the same deep blue background.

Looking across the older generation of Canadian provincial flags, that would seem rather sparse and American. I’ll have to think on it.
As for Alaska not being American, it only grates as you are accustomed to Earth; an external observer might well find it quite strange that it is part of the USA rather than Canada.

Oh, its certainly odd its American rather than either Russian, Canadian or independent.
The issue is that I LOVE Alaska and it makes me twitch to see it what it isn't now. Odd that its the ONLY thing that makes me twitch about alternative history. The US balkanized, no problems. Hell, if there's no US, not a problem. All Canadian, cool with that. China colonizes the US in the 1600's, great. But if there's a US, and Alaska isn't part of it, it makes me twitch.
Another oddity about the Canada/US/Alaska thing is the way they went about deciding the border. Was there a war? Nope. Did they negotiate the hell out of every square foot of ground? No. Did they try to assassinate the decision makers to get a more favorable deal? No way. Arbitration? Sure, lets do that!
They said
"Lets go with the 141st meridian.

Yeah, 141st. We'll do that and then instead of what you suggested for the rest of it, we'll go 10 marine leagues from the coast.
Ok. Cool with that. Lets go get drunk."
Where the hell else has there ever been a 1,500 mile border decided without war, or even, for that matter, sabre rattling? Just 6 guys who sat down, hammered out a an agreement that was beyond their remit, as actual arbitration would have been one position or the other being accepted. They, effectively, split the difference between the two positions and then went out and got drunk.

I must admit to holding no such attachment to a location, nor such passion about the nonsensical bounds of the border. Getting back to the flag, I’m almost certain that it would appear rather different.
