lordroel , On today's WWII thread you seem to have a duplication in the section on the Med where you mention the sinking of U-79 twice.
Also That's a bloody good achievement for a single sub against such a well protected convoy.

Hope you had a good Christmas and one quick question from today's WWII post.
Are this USAAF units evacuated from the Philippines as otherwise I can't see what their ground echelons are doing fighting in the islands?
Thanks

Thanks. Would be useful to clarify but no great hurry and if you can have a break and relax a bit.

Only found this so far from this page: USAAF Worldwide Operations Chronology, December 1941SOUTHWEST PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Far East Air Force): Lieutenant Colonel Charles H Caldwell sets up HQ Far East Air Force on the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) airfield at Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. HQ V Bomber Command is also established at Darwin. The 3d, 17th, 20th, 21st and 34th Pursuit Squadrons (Interceptor), 24th Pursuit Group (Interceptor), transfer from Ternate, Nichols Field, Clark Field, Nichols Field and Del Carmen respectively to Bataan, Luzon with P-35's and P-40's. The 17th and 20th begin operating from Lubao, Luzon with P-40's HQ 27th Bombardment Group (Light) and the ground echelon of it's 16th, 17th and 91st Bombardment Squadrons (Light) transfer from Lipa Airfield, San Fernando and San Marceleno respectively to Cabcaben, Luzon. The air echelons are operating from Brisbane, Australia; the ground echelons will fight as infantry on Luzon. And you can check out this site: The 5th Air Force in WWII > December 1941

OK that confirms they were yanks so probably the air units were evacuated from the Philippines. That's what I suspected from the reference to the grown crews but wasn't sure of. Thanks.

lordroel , In the WWI post today interesting comments about the Austrian attacks on Durazzo. Its normally reported as very little happening in the Adriatic, other than by subs, with both Austrian and Italian fleets largely sitting in port. Sounds like the Austrians at least were markedly more active than that. Be interesting to see if they get caught as never heard of this action before.
In the WWII post you have:
I think the 1st paragraph looks redundant as, other than the distance from Tobruk it contains no information the 2nd doesn't.

Happy New Year.
Interesting that in the declaration of the founding of the United Nations,
India is signing as a separate nation. Know it already had a large measure of self-government but suggests that even Churchill had to admit that independence was coming.

From India and the United Nations Wikipedia page: India was one of the original members of the League of Nations. In principle, lies only sovereign states can become UN members. However, although today all UN members are fully sovereign states, four of the original members (Belarus, India, the Philippines, and Ukraine) were not independent at the time of their admission. India signed the Declaration by United Nations on 1 January 1942 and was represented by Girija Shankar Bajpai who was the Indian Agent-General at the time. Afterwards the Indian delegation led by Sir Arcot Ramaswamy Mudaliar signed the United Nations Charter on behalf of India during the historic United Nations Conference on International Organization held in San Francisco, United States on 26 June 1945. Sir A. Ramaswamy Mudaliar later went on to serve as the first president of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Technically, India was a founding member in October 1945, despite it being a British colony. India, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia were all British colonies but were given independent seats in the United Nations General Assembly. India gained full independence in 1947.

Technically I wouldn't call Australia, Canada, New Zealand and S Africa colonies at this point. Although there were still close links with Britain and some technical matters that still had to go through the British Parliament to all intents and purposes are independent states. For instance, unlike in WWI when they were automatically brought into the war by the British dow in 1939 they declared war on Germany themselves.
I knew that Stalin claimed three UN seats for the USSR in 1945, with seats for Russia, Ukraine and Belarus and suggested that the US have the same right, although they never took up that option.

There is a duplication in the WWII post, see:
in today's post. You actually covered the sinking of the Langkoeas and massacre of survivors in more detail in yesterday's post.
Looking increasingly depressing in both Malaya and the Philippines, even if we didn't know what was to happen there.
