The first POD is on April 5, 1862, General Ulysses Grant pays attention to the noise and prepares for a Confederate attack. He orders Generals Buell and Wallace to bring their troops to Pittsburgh Landing.
On the morning of April 6, 1862 the 40,000 Confederates attack the Union forces at Pittsburgh Landing and found they didn’t score a surprise.Instead they found 70,000 Union forces waiting for them. the Union forces counterattacked and were able to take Corinth, Mississippi.
The Union celebrated the glorious victory of Shiloh and Cornith. General Lew Wallace is one of the heros. He may not write Ben Hur.
The Union forces moved through Mississippi faster then OTL. On November 1 , 1862, Grant launched his attack on Vicksburg. The second POD is that Grant gets the idea then that he used OTL on April 30,1863. ITTL the Union troops who were transported by ship down the Mississippi River landed south of Vicksburg and marched east. On November 15,1862 they took the Mississippi state capitol of Jackson. The Union forces moved east to establish a siege of Vicksburg. Vicksburg surrendered on January 7, 1863. Russian Orthodox Christmas is not celebrated in Vicksburg for many years.
Grant goes to Tennessee and leads the Union forces to victory at Chattanooga on April 2, 1863. On May 7, 1863, President Lincoln promotes Grant, the hero of Shiloh and Cornith, Vicksburg and Chatanooga to the post of Commanding General of the Union forces.
In June, Grants preparations for an invasion of Virginia are interrupted by news that Lees forces have entered Pennslyvania. On July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Grant overrules Meade and orders a counter attack on Lee’s Forces. When the union forces resupplied they leave to pursue Lee.
On July 6, 1863, Grant forces find Lee and his troops trapped by the destruction of their bridge and the swollen Potomac at Williamsport, Maryland. The Confederates have fortified their position and were awaiting their attack. The Battle of Williamsport raged from July , 1863-to July 9 1863.The Confederate forces escaped on their rebuilt bridge in the early morning hours of July 10, 1863. They destroyed the bridge before union forces could follow.
On August 9, 1863 Grant began his invasion of Virginia. After the indecisive Battles of the Wilderness and Cold Harbor, Grant attacked Petersburg on September 1, 1863. The siege of Petersburg would drag on for months.The high death toll would test the patience of Northerners and cast doubt on Lincoln’s chances of reelection. General
Sherman’s slow progress in Georgia would also raised tempers in the North,
Then on February 4, 1864 the good news would come that Sherman had taken Atlanta. On May 25, 1864 Sherman would take Savannah.
On the Fourth of July 1864 more good news would follow. On that day, Grant would take Petersburg. On July 6, 1864, the Confederate capitol of Richmond fell.
Sherman began his invasion of South Carolina on July 10, 1864. On July 27,1864 he took the state capitol of Columbia. On August 11, 1864, Sherman occupied Bentonville, North Carolina.
With supplies short and Sherman approaching Lee Surrendered to Grant on August 2, 1864.
The Democratic National Convention opened on August 27, 1864. The Peace Democrats had lost their main issue, An issue they did not share with their candidate George McClellan.
As the North celebrated its victory, McClellan would lose in a landslide. The popular vote was Lincoln 63 % to McClellan’s 37 %. Congress did not count the electoral,votes of the former Confederate states. Lincoln won all the Union states except Kentucky, for al Electoral College vote of 222 to 11.
