I've been giving some thought of late to a re-imagining or alternate version of the Warhammer Fantasy 'Old World' setting.
For me, the grimdark tone and frequent voyages into self parody detracted from what was a very good idea. Apart from these meta-issues, my overall views are:
- It combines fantasy and Earth parallels very well, but in some areas goes overboard
- The 'European' portion of The Old World seems rather too small
- Apart from The Empire, the other countries are, at best, an afterthought
- It can be very much characterised as at the low end of high fantasy
- The grimdark atmosphere is very much rooted in the 1980s. There is no triumph to be had, only a slow, inevitable loss to the forces of Chaos
- The elves are close to irrelevant, the dwarves a shadow of their former might, dragons an afterthought and the likes of trolls and ogres simply jokes
- The Renaissance/late Medieval mixture of technology and social developments is promising
- 'North America' is simply turned into a nightmare realm of the Dark Elves
My changes, or 'The Olde World'
- Not a Grimdark setting, nor a Noblebright one, but Nobledark: The world is incredibly dangerous and twisted, but there is good and it can win through the efforts of the valiant and heroic. Not everyone is cynical or corrupt.
- A larger Europe area containing more distinct countries/states
- The Great Ocean is much, much wider
- The Empire has 12 separate lands
- Mordheim not being hit by a comet
- Sylvania not completely ruled by vampires
- Albion is remodelled as an Arthurian/medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom, rather than a blasted barbaric wasteland
- The Wasteland becomes a more expansive analogue of the Low Countries and a player in its own right; very much inspired by the Early Modern Netherlands of @. More of the initial Westerland.
- Norsca is not completely chaotic, but is a mixture of chaotic barbarian tribes in the north and good kingdoms in the south and on the coast
- Sticking up towards Norsca is the Kingdom of Daneland, a rugged yet rich peninsula that is a combination of the Hanseatic League and medieval Denmark
- An analogue to Switzerland in a noble, democratic principality stuck between Bretonnia and the Empire
- The Border Princes become a closer analogue to South Eastern Europe/the Balkans, with some specific states
- As well as Estalia and Tilea (Spain and Italy), there is a kingdom which is the remnant of a fallen empire, Hellasium. It is an equivalent to the Byzantine Empire, with the once thriving city of Magnapolis a shadow of its former glory
- Across a narrow strait lies Hattusa, or a version of Anatolia. It is beset on its eastern border by the Badlands
- Between Hattusa, the Badlands and Nehekhara is a small, fertile area ruled by Crusaders; I'm yet to come up with a name, but something similar to Outremer could work
- Araby takes on a far more powerful and sophisticated character
- Ind, Nippon and Cathay are far more detailed and powerful
- A vast uncivilised waste lies north of the Darklands, Barbaricum, populated by human tribes
not all corrupted by Chaos. They are a mix of good, evil and large amounts of neutral/self interested. Parallels to Conan.
- The Eastern Steppes are ruled by Hobgoblin Khanate and other groups.
- North of that are the Northlands, occupied by the Kurgans and other classical Warhammer Chaos Warrior/barbarian groups
- The Chaos Wastes are separated from Barbaricum and Norsca by an icy sea
- A much bigger Mesoamerica between Lustria and the northern continent of the New World
I'll expand further as I develop the ideas.
