Like Canada, Australia is a huge and united Commonwealth country, formerly an Empire dominon. Could it have been governed separately though and thus setting the scene for a current day two/multi-state continent? As an imperfect example, Newfoundland was separate from Canada and could have continued it's independence if economic factors hadn’t sunk that. Could we see something similar in Australia?

However on a map the mainland continent will still be united politically.

Through the various wars of empires at one point, with the right POD, it seems possible that one of those nations could have carved out a portion of the mainland leading to a later division.

Or possibly even after the Napoleonic conflict. IIRC the 1st settlement at Perth in W Australia wasn't until 1829 so its possible that France could have staked a claim to the region earlier and possibly in exchange for some concessions elsewhere Britain accepts this.

There was a brief Western Australian secessionist movement, but it petered out before getting anywhere.
