At its height, the Islamic State grew to encompass much of Iraq and Syria too. It grew and grew... and then it stopped.
How big can it get? What event could have changed to not allow continued development?
I think it was Russian intervention post the bombing of that Russian passenger plane over Egypt which saw the reversal begin. But I could be very wrong here.

Probably, Iraq except Basra zone as Iran will try to create a puppet goverment as a buffer and the Gulf states and the USA will probably go for it as the lesser evil, Syria and much of Lebanon, plus they will try to inglobe Jordan but i expect that they will take only some piece as Israel will not allow it.
Even in case they succeed in create this state, i expect that it will more or less Pol Pot Cambodia mark 2, with Israel, Turkey and Iran cumberstomping it after half a decade as they have basically transformed that place in 'hell in earth'.

The only way that ISIS will have this kind of success it's in case of a limited nuclear war between NATO and Russia that destroy the central goverment of that countries, otherwise it will be impossible. Hell just the troops the French (with other EU contingent) sent in Africa basically routed the ISIS african arm, by a mix of direct confrontation and training and supporting the local troops.- |

That would probably be the likely result of any larger IS state. Its basically an attempt to to establish a Draka like state but without the stupidity virus fortunately.
The map does seem a bit odd as it excludes current Muslims areas such as Bangladesh and Indonesia and also historical 'claims' such as Sicily and Iberia. Mind you given their megalomania and psychotic fear of others they wouldn't feel either happy or secure until there was nothing and nobody outside their control.
