This is an idea that's been developing for some time now. I considered a Timeline in a week, but I know myself and my update record for MFOH and EPNB before it. Two weeks it is. Anyway, here it is.

Prelude: The End Of Ottawa
Catherine McKenna, MP for Ottawa Centre, sat quietly on the steps of the Centre Block.
While Parliament Hill was deserted, Ottawa was not. Screams could be heard in the distance, residents fighting over food and shelter. The highways leading out of the city were choked with cars as people desperately attempted to get away from what would be an obvious nuclear target.
A middle-aged man approached the building. She recognized him as David McGuinty, the MP for Ottawa South. He walked up to her.
“Can I sit here?”
McKenna shrugged. “Sure, go ahead.”
The two sat without speaking for a few minutes, listening to the air-raid sirens wailing in the distance. Mckenna broke the silence.
“So. Why didn’t you evacuate?”
McGuinty looked at her. “Why should I? My riding will be wiped out in a few minutes. Better to stay here and die with my constituents than run away.”
Mckenna nodded. “Me too.”
“Do you think that the government will survive?” asked McGuinty.
Mckenna frowned. “I hope so. They’re being dispersed everywhere as far as I know.”
“Good.” The silence returned for two more minutes before McKenna spoke.
“You know, I never thought that it would come to this.”
McGuinty nodded in approval. “Yeah. I always acknowledged that nuclear war was possible, but not that it was probable or inevitable.”
“Well, once the first one went off in Poland, I had a feeling that the end was coming. From what I’ve read, it’s impossible to control nuclear escalation. First Lomza. Then Baranovichi. Then Brussels. Now...” The MP trailed off.
McGuinty absorbed what Mckenna had said. “This species has done some amazing things, but we can be really dumb sometimes.”
“No kidding.”
The middle-aged man looked at his watch. “We got the alert twenty minutes ago. The missiles should start hitting soon.”
“I’m sure that they’ve already hit a few places.”
Neither politician was aware of it, but Mckenna was correct. St. John’s in Newfoundland had just been annihilated, while Halifax burned. Nuclear warheads were approaching dozens of cities and military bases.
McGuinty turned to McKenna. “It was great working with you in the Commons.”
“Thanks, and same to—”
There was a bang and a flash as a nuclear warhead detonated over Ottawa International Airport, thirteen kilometres southwest of downtown Ottawa. The surrounding suburbs were vaporized, windows in the downtown core shattering. Screams were heard as the residents of the city realized what happened and what was to come. McKenna and McGuinty stood up, gawking at the mushroom cloud rising over the destroyed airport.
“That was…”
“A nuke,” McKenna finished.
“I guess this is it, then.”
“Yeah…heh. You know what’s funny?”
“What?”
“Tru--”
She never finished her sentence as a nuclear warhead detonated right above Parliament Hill. The two MPs felt nothing as their world evaporated. The blast and subsequent firestorm consumed everything: buildings, cars, people. An angry, orange mushroom cloud rose above the city. Ottawa, like dozens of other places in Canada, had met its end in a storm of fire and fury.

Grim but always a possibility if nukes started getting exchanged. Hopefully something will survive although it may need some sort of ASB intervention for targets in the northern hemisphere.

I'm picturing the Ottawa denotations as the blasts over KC were depicted in 'The Day After'.

Bookmarked, redrobin! Hope there is continuity of government for Canada, and many survivors. Doubt it as most of the Canadian Cold War nuclear bunkers ( Emergency Government Headquarters) build in the in the 1950s and 1960s as part of continuity of government planning at the height of the Cold War where decommissioned at the end of the Cold War, unless there are some out there we do no know of.

Somewhere over the Arctic, May 9th, 2022
“We should reach our target in about…nine hours, sir.”
“Okay. Nav, keep us on a steady course.”
“Roger that.”
Major Lazar Telianovich squinted as 24 Tu-95MS bombers flew over the Arctic on their way to major targets in the United States and Canada.
Telianovich’s aircraft, a Tu-95MS Bear nicknamed “Broadsword,” was assigned two targets in Canada. The first one was the port of Charlottetown, capital of Prince Edward Island. The second was the major rail hub of Truro, Nova Scotia.
Telianovich had doubts as to whether or not most of the Bears would hit their targets. The overwhelming majority of the fast Blackjacks, Backfires, and even a few of the experimental Beavers were assigned to hitting targets in Europe, the Middle East, and China. In the Major’s opinion, the old Bears wouldn’t stand a chance against F-35s, F-22s, and F-15s. “At least the missiles were supposed to hit their bases,” he thought.
Olenya Air Base, where Broadsword had taken off, was already gone, a victim of three 500kt warheads. “Hopefully, the American and Canadian bases are gone too.”
Summerside, Prince Edward Island, May 10th, 2022. An air of apprehension was widespread throughout the small town.
The leadup to war had left many residents and officials nervous. When it actually came, a resolute feeling swept the town. We’ll get through it, No need to worry, and We can win this were rather common…at least for the first week.
When news of the destruction of Lomza reached the town, plenty of people started preparing for the worst. Not many actually thought that Summerside would be nuked, the Air Force base had been closed since 1990! However, they had to be ready for refugees from Charlottetown if it was destroyed.
Then, Baranovichi was hit. Retaliation from Russia was swift, Brussels ceasing to exist. Terror spread as news came that ICBMs were on their way. To make things even worse, every single hotel, inn, hostel, and Airbnb in Summerside had filled up with people from Charlottetown and other cities in the Maritime Provinces. Residents locked themselves in their basements and shut the curtains in preparation for a nuclear blast…
…which never came.
Now, the Provincial Government, which had evacuated from Charlottetown, was having a tense meeting in the basement of the Summerside City Hall.
“So,” the Minister of Transportation began. “We’ve communicated with the New Brunswick Government in Moncton. They’re saying that Fredericton and the base at Gagetown are gone. They’re also dealing with American refugees crossing the border.”
“What are they doing with the refugees?” Premier Wade MacLauchlan implored.
“Most are being denied access, but some are getting shot.”
The room went silent for a moment. “Well, hopefully it doesn’t come to that here.”
“We also received information from the Nova Scotians. Their Cabinet managed to evacuate to Cape Breton. Halifax is gone, it was one of the first.”
“Anything from the Newfies?”
“Nothing, just scattered radio signals.”
“Quebec?
“I do know that Quebec City was hit, that’s all we can decipher.”
“Ontario?”
“Nothing there. I have a feeling that it’s probably the worst hit area in the whole country.”
“Well then. Colonel, what can we do to maintain order?”
Lieutenant Colonel George Morton was the commander of the Prince Edward Island Regiment. “Well, I have a platoon in Borden-Carleton guarding the entrance to the bridge. We need to make sure that no irradiated refugees cross. There’s another platoon at Charlottetown Airport and two here. All the other units are spread out across the province, manning roadblocks and guarding things like power plants. We, along with the RCMP, are enforcing the curfew.”
The Minister of Agriculture spoke. “We’ll need to start rationing what we have. Our agriculture is great, but that might be affected by fallout.”
"Oh, one thing,” Morton said. “We still need to be able to react to nuclear threats. Bombers are definitely coming. I don’t know if they’ll come here, but we have to look out. Submarines too.”
What was hit: Maritimes New Brunswick
Fredericton: 2 150kt airbursts (Downtown, airport) (SLBM)
CFB Gagetown: 1 150kt airburst (Army base) (SLBM)
Newfoundland and Labrador St John’s: 2 150kt airburst (downtown, airport) (SLBM)
Nova Scotia Halifax: 3 150kt airburst (downtown, airport, CFB Halifax) (SLBM) Canso: 1 150kt airburst (spaceport) (SLBM)
