Possibly that might have been a factor, if he fell foul of some local bigwig in Senegal, that led to his enslavement and being sold to westerners? He seems to have got off relatively lightly compared to many enslaves people even after a couple of escape events, but I suspect he would still have had a lot of unpleasant experiences, even apart from the basic loss of liberty.

Must admit when I 1st saw the thread title I was thinking it was a white American who had been enslaved in N Africa by the Barbary pirates.
