The first POD comes on April 5, 1862. Intelligence officers brief General Grant on the danger of an eminent Confederate attack. Grant orders Generals Buell and Wallace to move their forces to Pittsburg Landing. On the morning of April 6, 1862, the 40,000 Confederates expected to surprise the Union forces. Instead they found 70,000 Federal forces waiting for them. The Union forces would advance through the Confederates and by evening of the 6th, they had taken Corinth Mississippi. ITTL Grant is the hero of the glorious victory of Shiloh and Corinth, rather then the goat of the near defeat he was OTL. Wallace was likewise a hero. He does not suffer what he saw as an injustice of being relieved of his command. Does he write Ben Hur, the novel of someone who suffered an injustice?
On December 1, 1862 we see the second POD, Grant has the same idea he used OTL in May 1863. On that day, the Navy ferries Grants troops across to the East Bank of the Mississippi River south of Vicksburg. Grant leads his troops further east. On December 14, 1862, he attacks Jackson, Mississippi. After taking the state capitol, Grant leads his troops west toward Vicksburg,as Sherman attacks from the north. By Christmas, the Union forces have surrounded Vicksburg. On February 14, 1863 after a long siege, Vicksburg surrenders. Valentines Day is not celebrated in Vicksburg for many years. After taking Vicksburg, Grant and most of his forces moved to Tennessee. On June 14, 1863, Grant leads his troops to victory at Chattanooga and the invasion of Georgia begins.
We see the third POD on June 22, 1863. Lincoln appointed Grant, the hero of Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg and Chattanooga as Commander of All Union Forces. Grant begins planning his invasion of Virginia but learns that Lee has invaded Pennsylvania. on July 3, 1863, Grant overrules Meade and orders a final assault as he observes Lee preparing to withdraw. The Army of the Potomac followed the Army of Northern Virginia as they attempted to escape. When Lee’s forces arrived at Williamsport, Maryland on July 7, 1863, they found that their pontoon bridge had been destroyed and rain had swollen the river making fording impossible. The trapped Confederates suffered another Union attack. The Battle of Williamsport forced Lee to surrender to Grant on July 8, 1863. On September 3, 1863, Grant began his invasion of Virginia on August 3, 1863. Richmond fell on September 4, 1863. Grant began a long bloody journey South. Sherman took Atlanta on February 1, 1864. On March 22, 1864, he took Savannah. By that time Grant’s forces were in South Carolina. The two Union armies would unite and on April 27, they forced the surrender of the Confederate government in Montgomery, Alabama.
The early victory helped the political fortunes of President Lincoln. in November, he would win reelection by a landslide. He defeated McClellan by 61 % to 39 % in the popular vote. He carried all the Union states except Kentucky. Congress did not accept the electors from the former Confederate states.
