Yeltsin won re-election to the Russian presidency in 1996 against his Communist challenger in the form of Zyuganov. There are many allegations that the whole re-election was bought and the Communists should have won.
How could they have won? What direction would they have taken Russia in post-victory?

How could they have won? What direction would they have taken Russia in post-victory? With a difference of fifteen points, just some fraud won't get you there. So, you would need a bunch of scandals, part of them already happening before the first round, and then a major event to make people really lose confidence in him. The best would be some kind of economic disaster.

Yeltsin's health is questionable at this time, so I wouldn't be surprised if he had another heart attack. A stroke that incapacitates him might also result in different electoral outcomes for Zyuganov et al. Zhirinovsky's LDPR at this time is declining due to the reputation of its leader.
