Images like that make for a closer, personal touch to understanding at the impact at the time. Interesting I was hearing on the radio a couple of days back about a Belgium woman, aged about 40 who qualifies as a victim of WWI. When she was 8 years old she was some sort of youth camp sort of thing and in the evening they were gathered around a bomb-fire. Unfortunately one of the pieces of wood that were thrown on it was a corroded WWI shell. She suffered serious damage to one leg and had to endure a number of operations over the following years.
I think every year people are still dying or being seriously injured when farmers especially plough up unexploded ordinance in Belgium or NE France and that seems likely to continue for decades to come so many shells were fired and many failing to explode at the time.
