In Bob Woodward's Fear it says that after the Access Hollywood tape became public there was made public there was discussion of Trump resigning from the ticket and being replaced by Pence, Condoleezza Rice would be the new Republican Vice Presidential candidate. The POD is in the Access Hollywood tape Trump is filmed doing what he said he could do. Pence would be linked to Trump that would hurt him. His social conservative views would turn off many moderates. Many of whom would be turned off by Hillary, so turnout would be lower.Rice who has never run for office before is not very helpful to Pence. The popular vote would be 50% Clinton 46% Pence 4% protest votes. The Electoral College is Clinton is 333 Clinton 205 Pence. That is the OTL Hillary states plus Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona. The House is still Republican but with the victories of the Democratic candidates in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin is tied 50 50. Vice President Kaine is preoccupied in the Senate breaking. The legislation passed is the result of compromise. In 2017 and 2018 there is no major legislation passed. There is no summit with Kim Jung Un.

Agreed that Pence would likely lose in 2016 if he became the 2016 GOP nominee in October 2016. Trump's supporters would feel betrayed at Trump being thrown overboard and thus a lot of them could have stayed home on Election Day. Plus, Pence would have lacked Trump's charisma and ability to connect with White working-class voters and thus would probably not have been as capable as getting White working-class voters to turn out and vote for him. Pence would have a lot of appeal to Evangelical Christians, but this might be undercut by his running mate being a pro-choicer. However, it's also worth noting that, in spite of his pro-choice past, Trump also had a lot of appeal among Evangelical Christians due to his desire to overturn Roe v. Wade; thus, I don't think that having Pence be the 2016 GOP nominee instead of Trump would have made much of a difference among Evangelical Christians.

Rice is interesting and I am a fan but it wouldn't have played. How establishment could you get!? It would look like tokenism too, even worse than Palin. And Pence... one big yawn he is, but I'm sure he is more like Cheney was than we are aware of in terms of his current influence.
