Welles said in the 1982 BBC interview that he didn't think anyone who had been divorced could be president, and he didn't want to run for the senate unless he felt he could be president eventually. He was, however, promoted by Louis Dolivet as a possible first secretary general of the United Nations, but nothing ever came of that. Interesting irony is that, in one of his 1945 Commentary shows, Welles suggests General Dwight Eisenhower as the perfect man to head the UN. A few year later, Eisenhower became president of the US instead.

Oh that’s very interesting what he said about Ike. I could see Welles getting in to politics. I assume he runs for Senate in California. It’s more likely he runs in the 60s. ‘68 would be cool to see. Running on an anti-Vietnam platform supported by Paul Newman and other members of Hollywood. With some butterflies, if ‘76 or ‘80 is open for a Democratic win, I could see Welles becoming President.
