How does Gerry handle the late seventies?
As stated in his autobiography, A Time to Heal, after the Republican Convention in Kansas City Ford was accompanied by his running mate Robert "Bob" Dole, Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, and John Connally, the former governor of Texas to Vail, Colorado where beginning in late August 1976 they along with senior aides begin to craft a campaign strategy that would be tailored for the general election, and would serve as a road map for the continuation of the Ford administration if he was reelected.
"We wanted to spur the creation of millions of new jobs, accelerate home ownership, provide quality, affordable health care and reduce crime," Ford said. He went on to say, "We would keep inflation down, retain unquestioned military strength, guarantee the peace".
These are abstract principles, but on September 15, 1976 he gave his first major speech as the party nominee in which he elaborated on the many things discussed at Vail. The speech was given on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor at the Crisler Arena.

I think the Ford Administration gives more military aid to the Shah. He hangs on to power but there is a bloody civil war in Iran. There is no hostage crisis, but 1980 is still a Democratic year. There is still a recession. The Republican candidate is Ronald Reagan who not running against an incumbent in a time of crisis is a weak candidate. He had a record of unpopular opinions like his opposition to Medicare.
