What if Nelson Rockefeller was not confirmed as Vice President? There was controversy over Rockefeller's gifts, including some to New York state government officials, while he was Governor. What if it was discovered he received a quid pro quo for one of these gifts. There was also the biography that attacked his opponent in the 1970 election. it was financed by Rockefeller's brother. He said he knew nothing about it. What if it comes out he was involved in it. I think that President Ford would have selected George H.W. Bush as his replacement Vice President and he would have been confirmed. Ford would have been impressed with Bush's knowledge of foreign policy and politics. They would have a good working relationship. Bush would have been the first Vice President to have an office in the West Wing. Ford does not consult Reagan about a running mate and selects Bush. Considering the close margins in Ohio, Wisconsin and Mississippi and there is no Dole talking about Democratic wars, I think Ford wins the 1976 election. Bush runs for President for President in 1980. Reagan defeats him for the Republican nomination. Reagan loses the general election. He is off the President's party in bad economic times and he has a record of unpopular opinions like his opposition to Medicare.
In 1984, Bush is the front runner and wins the nomination. In the good economic times he loses to President Mondale. So he is never President. The question is will his sons George W and Jen have their OTL political careers?
