Thames angering Margaret Thatcher is argued to have helped lead to the 1990 Broadcasting Act and thus Thames demise as the London Weekday ITV contractor.... you only have to look at the GLC or the miners to see what she did to those that challenged her. A lot of people paid the price for Thames' mistake with Death on the Rock.

Well, the three bids were as follows:
CPV-TV: £45,319,000 Carlton Television: £43,200,000 Thames Television: £32,700,000
The entrants were assessed first on quality grounds; then on the soundness of their business plan; and then the highest remaining bidder won. In OTL, CPV-TV failed on quality grounds, while the other two passed on both quality grounds and business plan - so, as the highest bidder left in, Carlton Television won the franchise.
Perhaps we get Carlton to bid a bit higher (in order to outbid CPV-TV), and then they fail on their business plan?
