In 1986, the United States bombed Libya and there was a specific attack made against the Bab al-Azizia complex where Gaddafi was present. Warned by the leaders of Italy and Malta, Gaddafi escaped in time.
Let us say he doesn't get the word or manage to escape if he does. The bombs go boom and he is dead. Does Libya fall apart into civil war or is it all good and peace/prosperity/democracy/happy times breaks out in Tripoli?

But looks like a nice operation which could have major impact on Libya if it had succeeded: Operation El Dorado Canyon: Libya Under Air Attack in 1986

At that point the cold war is still very active and also with Gaddafi probably not as discredited internally I can't see Libya evolving into a democracy. You could see a member of his family or extended clan taking over, possibly in real power or just a figure-head for more experienced figures. This may or may not be stable in the short term. Probably going to have a clear-out of possible opponents, who of course were 'implicated' in the US attack or who's 'incompetence' were 'responsible' for Gaddafi's death.
Alternatively it might end up with some degree of civil war as assorted groups struggle for power. This could end up with foreign support for some of those factions, the Soviets on one side and possibly the Egyptians and/or Americans on another and possibly also some Islamic reactionaries as a 3rd factor.

In 1986, if Gaddafi is killed in a US airstrike it could get messy in Libya.
