Yes its astonishing how long the Paraguayans persisted in the war and how devastating it was. With ~90% of the adult male population dead its a wonder the country actually continued to exist.

Not with an idiot like Lopaz in charge, managing to establish a triple alliance against him. Although there seems to have been a degree of fanaticism throughout the country as a whole.

I've often though of Lopecista Paraguay as a 19th century North Korea, and that suicidal foolhardiness combined with some other strange things (like forbidding people from marrying within their race) turned him into a prototype for 20th century dictators.
