On the 23rd of October 1975, the IRA came very close to killing JFK's daughter, Caroline. She was staying at the home of a British MP and his wife - Hugh and Antonio Fraser - in London when a car bomb went off early killing a passing civilian. Kennedy was due to be given a lift to work at Sotheby's by them as she did every day.
Whether the IRA knew that or not, the bomb was set to explode when the car was moving and she would have been in it. Yet it exploded prematurely when Caroline and her hosts were still inside the Fraser household.
Let's say the bomb does as it is meant to. Kennedy is an accidental casualty, murdered alongside the Frasers.
What kind of reaction could have occurred back home in the US? This is only a dozen years after her father died.

Well the hard line fanatics in the US won't be phased but they could have significantly more problems getting support for funding for terrorist activities in the US and there is likely to be more support for those opposing terrorism. In fact with the death of a member of a significant political dynasty you could see some in the US urging action to suppress the IRA.

So it seems you are right: IRA almost blew up Caroline KennedyMy guess is that Irish sympathy in the United States will be a lot colder after the death of here. |
