In 1976.President Ford said..F "there is no Soviet domination of eastern Europe, and there never will be under a Ford administration." Can he defeat Jimmy carter if he never aid that?

It would help but he faces an uphill task as after Watergate and then Ford's pardoning of Nixon both party and candidate were seen as rather toxic and there was a desire for a candidate from outside the Washington mainstream so difficult not to see Carter elected.

I don't agree that it wasn't fatal. I've read a lot about this. Carter was an outsider yes but that wasn't what everyone wanted; Ford was mister dependable. That all aside, it wasn't just the gaffe itself it was what happened afterwards. Ford went silent then, after a time, had his surrogates defend it. His poll numbers dropped as his campaign came to pieces. Before that Ford was rising. Carter and his remarks about feelings in his little heart for women other than his wife along with Ford going on the charm offensive with a well-liked baseball player were having an effect before Ford's gaffe and the subsequent f-up with the president's non-reaction.
