Starting from Point of Divergence Ideas where it talks about the secret gospel of Mark, and a Reddit post here that talks about arranged gay marriages, I've wanted to write a novel/run a tabletop campaign set in the second crusade with something like this. Any ideas for how I should go about it? |

True, I was thinking of using some of the ideas in both(the secret gospel and the Reddit post), maybe with an alternate translation of the bible

For of all, it's important to realise that the whole abbreviation is rather artificial, there are several mutually exclusive groups in there and a wide variety of issues which don't necessarily overlap. So it would be helpful to be more specific.

It is a big ask. The world then was even more so controlled by religion. The issue of the divine right of kings / emperors means that all changes must come from above too. Social changes will be dictated from above, not public opinion.

Back then every aspect of society and Western European culture was influenced by the Pope and the Church, and it's widely known Christianity is not so acceptive towards LGBT individuals and their philosophies. Back then, they were ultra-mega-conservatives. I mean, if they murdered people for saying the Earth rotated around the world--a fundamental element of modern astronomy and orbital physics--, then imagine what they could do if suddenly a bunch of people began an LGBT movement similar to ours. You'll see blood. And fiery piles of wood with bodies burning in public squares. It's such a controversial topic even today, that adding the Middle Ages-type of thinking is like adding propane to a raging forest fire. Unless you keep off from dangerous territory, I suggest not venturing too deep. At least that's my opinion. Interesting nonetheless. Really makes you think. |

Sorry if that's too political. It's not really political. It's religious, and those are the two big no-nos in discussion places. However, alternate history is so much about politics that it's hard to avoid it entirely. As long as you follow the rules, you'll have fun in this place. It's a nice forum. Keep thinking about it and find a way not to make it too radical  |

Keep thinking about it and find a way not to make it too radical What I had said so far that letting them actually be married was only in Wales and a tiny part of england near wales, otherwise some places are more "just live and don't call it a marriage and you are good", others are more the traditional burn them at the stake or force them to hide it type places. |

Interesting find. Raises some fascinating questions about the dark and medieval periods especially. Fear we will never know decisively what the situation was, assuming there was 'one' standard status over the entire region at any one time, let along over several centuries. Attitudes and meaning could well have changed over centuries with possibly one age never realising an earlier one had a different interpretation. |
