I would agree with Raunchel here. After all one of the reason's for the islanders isolation is that their vulnerable to diseases from the outside world. Not to mention the problems and chance of further violence.

Well that will cause a problem, do you let a body be buried there or will you have to use a major landing to get the body back which might cause all kind of disturbance to the North Sentinel Island population. I was directed here from the "US man killed by tribe after ignoring ban on visiting remote North Sentinel island" thread. After reading a few articles about this, I can conclusively say that Mr. Chau made a very bad decision.
It's tragic that he was killed, and maybe he did have genuinely good intentions, but he just wasn't thinking straight in his attempts to proselytize people who'd clearly have none of it. He didn't have much cultural sensitivity training, it seems.
That, and Chau is also said to have brought tribe-threatening diseases along with him.

To be honest, I wonder how Christian news sites will cover this story. I hope they keep in mind that Chau was being unnecessarily disruptive and engaging in a lost cause.

As far as I can see, moderately Christan pages say that it was to be expected that he would be murdered, although his desire was a good one. I can check the serious ones tomorrow because it's Sunday and the one I read is closed because of that. |

So, I've looked a bit more closely, and a more serious Christian newspaper doesn't really say much about it. The headline is just: Native people kills 'missionary', so in effect, he's not seen as a real missionary. Which makes sense, because he's from a different branch of Christianity.
In terms of missionaries being killed abroad, I remember that there have been a few other cases in the last few years, but most of them were just the victims of crimes that had little to do with their missionary work.

The thing that grates with me is that, if he did any research he should have known he could have been a typhoid Mary, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Mallon, to those poor people but doesn't actually seemed to have given a damn about this. Its one thing for someone to be willing to die for their believes, albeit not so much if their determined to force those beliefs down other's throats but being willing to put other people's lives at risk because he wants to feel important! Basically I find it difficult to find any sympathy for him because he showed such contempt for others. Hopefully there will be no bad consequences for the people on the island. |
