I watched True Grit last night. It was the 2010 Coen Brothers version. Very good film. It was a bit short but that was the only failing. It is a Western and while I am not a fan of those this was highly-rated so I watched it. The story is told from the POV of a 14 year-old girl. She is brave and precocious but she is still a child. The film is believable in that regard as showing her from a strong yet vulnerable position too. I'll watch it again soon when I get the chance to appreciate it better. I am probably older than most of you and can still remember seeing the Duke Wayne version of True Grit when it premiered. I liked it then and I like it now.
I watched the Jeff Bridges version just to see how the new generation would screw it up. I had a hard time understanding Jeff but, these days, any new western is worth my time so I stuck it out to the end. OK movie, with little rewatch value was my conclusion.
A few years later I watched it again after reading Portis' book and guess what? The quality of the film improved greatly. I still prefer the Duke but Bridges and Co. are now worth rewatching.
Heard about the movie, never have seen it, did not know it was a remake of a older one. Also it seems you are promoted to Seaman oscssw.

So I was going through movies released in 2019 that I missed over the weekend. One of them was Roland Emmerich's Midway, which I enjoyed. I also enjoyed it. I really detested the Charlton Heston piece of crap.
I would have lost money on a bet that Woody Harrelson would make a good Nimitz. He actually was pretty convincing.
All in all not a waste of a couple of hours and that is saying a lot these days. Great job on the CGI ships and aircraft. They actually look like the WWII originals.

But they did not needed to do the Chinese part in the movie, i heard that it was included as a Chinese company financing part of the movie and to satisfy the Chinese market as a anti-Japanese movie.

That sounds like it could be the case. China produces lots of anti-Japanese Movies and Holywood loves pandering to the Chinese market.

The opening titles for Death Wish 3 (1985). I remember seeing this movie back then for the first time in April 2009. Love its opening track, gives off the 1980s vibe. This track was in my head when I arrived at LGA then headed to Midtown Manhattan in the Summer of 2014.

Matt Damon played the part of Mark Watney perfectly (or at least as close to that as one can get), if you ask me. Did you ever read the book that it was based off of, out of curiosity?

Even though book-based movies tend to tweak and adapt events and elements of the setting quite noticeably, I think you'll find that in this case, the book is remarkably similar to The Martian movie. Save for more copious entries due to how the book can devote more attention to that side of Watney's grand misadventure, of course.

Here's one rare movie I have seen: Purple Sunset, a 2001 Chinese anti-war film set in the Manchurian Strategic Offensive (aka Operation August Storm). This is one the films that takes on this short conflict between the USSR and Japan during the last days of World War II. It is available to watch for free on YouTube here, with English subtitles: TV Tropes page: link

I was genuinely disturbed. Many people say the events of 2020 is God's punishment to humanity for making Cats.

I suppose I should count myself lucky that I've never watched it, and probably don't plan to depending on what else I find out about how perturbing it is?
