It might keep the invasion and following atrocities in the news a little longer but I doubt it would make any real difference. He would likely be murdered by the Indonesians at some stage and the fact he was 'working with resistance fighters' would cloud the issue a bit. Its noted that even now the Australian government doesn't press the issue of the 5 journalists who's murder initial prompted him to go to East Timor so I doubt if they or any other western power would have kicked up a fuss if he had died in somewhat murkier circumstances than OTL.  |
