I was always a fan of QB Dan Marino. He was a rookie in the 1984 NFL season and did extremely well. But it was his legendary second season where he passed for more than 5,000 yards and 48 touchdowns, the Dolphins going 14-2 and making it to the 1985 Super Bowl....where they were beaten by the extremely powerful 15-1 49ers 38-16 that made Marino famous.
It was commonly believed that Marino would one day win a Super Bowl ring but he never got back to the big game. What do rest of you football fans think was his best chance to get to the Super Bowl and actually win it.
I think his best opportunity was the 1985 season (1986 Super Bowl). The Dolphins were beaten badly by the upstart New England Patriots in the AFC Title game who went on to lose to the 15-1 Chicago Bears 46-10.
But the Dolphins were the only team to beat the Bears during the entire 1985 regular season in a legendary Monday night game. I think had they managed to get past the Patriots they would've had a decent chance of beating the Bears again. The 1985 Dolphins had Marino of course and the slight vestiges of their running game and defense from earlier years.
So my vote is the 1985 season (1986) Super Bowl for Dan Marino and company.
