A combination of Soviet secrecy and American conspiracy theory. At least the two sides managed to work together in that! Had to laugh at the bit "The impact of Glasnost in rewriting Soviet history was so great that in 1988 Soviet high school history exams were cancelled because revelations about the past had rendered their textbooks useless."

That's what I read about some time ago. Totalitarian states are lying bastards, the lot of them.

Capitalist states are just as bad.
All your money in those banks is quite safe, and those banks are run by sensible, competent people.
Here, have a mortgage and a credit card!
*2007*
Oh dear.

On that we're in full agreement. The basic problem in the west today is that too much power has been concentrated in too few hands and the ordinary people are often viewed with contempt by the self-proclaimed 'elite'. Coupled with corrupted political systems based too heavily on concentrations of wealth. In such situations concepts of community and society are far more difficult to defend against centralised power. Note:- Taking here the definition of capitalist that I think vH intends, that its the dominant elements in the political economy as opposed to a factor in a mixed economy. As history shows the latter is far more successful in maintaining a healthy economy but is attacked by both extremes because they lack tolerance of other alternatives.
