August 19, 1991: When Russian President Boris Yeltsin climbed aboard a tank in front of the Russian White House to confront the Soviet troops that besieged the building, a KGB sniper positioned on a nearby rooftop shot him in the head and killed him instantly.

I suspect more that Russia collapses into civil war. Or possibly a new military dictatorship with a new cold war. However by this time they had already lost the assorted E European satellites so I suspect that a WWIII scenario would be highly unlikely. You are likely to see a number of the SSRs seeking independence as well with the Balts and the Caucasus region already largely adrift and a lot of others going that way. |
